Thought you all might like a heads-up that a dealer has listed a Hudson Hornet on ClassicCar.com. Though he's being a little cagey about it. It's his own car, he doesn't provide much detail about the car, and for price, all he says is "The price? It would take a lot. I love it.".

You can see the listing at Hudson Hornet for sale on ClassicCar.com

Given the paint job, and the mention of Camaro, I've put this under the Street Rod area... I trust that's the right spot for this.

I am shopping for a manual transmission to put behind my 308 - I'm nearing the part in my build where it would be really nice to know where everything will fit and bolt up and how things will need to be fabricated.

A friend suggested a T5, and there are a few around in my budget, but I wanted to ask you guys what your experiences were before I made a decision.

I would like this car to be a driver with plenty of pep. I wont be drag racing or doing crazy burnouts (all the time but would like that something that makes highway speeds at low rpms all day long. Does such a beast exist.

Even though I am on a budget, I would still like to hear what you have run or what you're planning on running, what you've seen, etc. Maybe even suggestions for where to go to have an adapter made, etc.

Thank you!

Alright....it's been a while.....way too long, but I've made a "schmidge" of progress on my '49 in the past few weeks. here's some pics.

Here's the cancer as purchased. this is below the trunk lid pretty much on the centerline of the car. Obviously the owner had dragged the ass-end over something cause it was a bit torn up too. Lance (aka Hudzilla) on the forum sold me the center section I needed. I think he charged me $45 and the area I needed was rust free.

And here's a picture from the inside. Luckily most of the cancer was confined to the one location.

So I sliced it out and lined up the new one and marked it (you can see the new piece sitting in the trunk at the top of the picture).

With the new segement marked for cutting, fired up the bandsaw and cut it down to size.

I cut it a little long, then ground it to fit.

I needed to pull the cut ends down to properly "gap" the trunk lid, so I temp welded a channel across the bottom and used c-clamps to get everything lined up (you can also see a 2x2 board inside holding one end out a little).

Once I had it fitting nicely, it was obvious that manufacturing tolerance came into play. The inner frame channel on the new piece was welded in a 1/4" lower than mine....damn now what.

So I fire up the mill with a 1/4" flat bottom cutter and drilled out the spot welds to separate the parts.

Here's everything pulled appart.

Now I'm lining up each piece individually getting ready to weld them back in.

I'll put up some more pics shortly.

Greetings all. I'm new to this site, so hopefully one of you guys can help me out. I recently rescued a 34 Hudson 8 4dr sedan from an old chicken coop, and so far everything seems to be ok with it. Someone started restoring it probably 30 odd yrs ago and never finished it. The car was totally apart when I got it, but most everything is with it in boxes, buckets, jars, etc, except the motor. To date, I've upgraded the front with a Mustang II, rear with a chevy 12 bolt 3:31 posi with a four link, and a 427 BB truck motor & Th350. I want to make this thing a classic looking driver with modern drivability. Does anyone know anything about a folding bar in the rear seat floor area? I'm guessing it is a foot rest of some sort but don't know where or how this thing attaches. I'll may be looking for some misc. parts soon if I can't find the rest of them. Thanks in advance for any help. Ray

Well, as I'm getting ready to intall my 4-link rear suspension, I'm needing to figure out what pinion angle I need to have. Since I'm pretty much going to have this thing on the ground, the anlges of the 2 piece drive line will be much different than the stock angles. The new engine and trans combo also play a role. So, going off the very helpful directions from the Spicer Driveline Intallation Manual <http://www2.dana.com/pdf/J3311-1-HVTSS.PDF>, I've arrived at the following set-up which I think will work just fine. I may need to increase the height of the driveline tunnel slightly as it goes under the front bench seat, but probably small price to pay to have everything dialled in. Has anyone out there gone through this process....and what did you end up with....would you do it differently? The 2 piece driveline will actually be very nice for a very low ride since a single piece driveline would need to have a very high/deep driveline tunnel to reach the rearend. Comments are welcome!!!!

Thanks,

I expect I will catch a ration of shit for even asking this, but the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
I got to talking to a friend about what little I know about Hudson transmissions and he had never heard of the cork clutch.
I explained that this was one of the reasons I was searching for an alternate transmission to mate to my 308 for my project as I have been told from numerous Hudson folks that these are fickle and easy to destroy in uneducated hands (or feet on pedals in this case).
He was wondering if one could adapt a more common/modern clutch assembly to the Hudson transmission and just forgo the cork clutch altogether.
It got my wheels turning. Has this been done? Would anyone even bother? Are there other things to consider?
Thanks ahead of time for your constructive thoughts and advice.

SB Chevy with Dual Range Hydra-Matic in Hudson

Has anyone installed a SB Chevy and retained the Hydra-Matic in their Hudson?

I had a SB Chevy and 56 Old dual range Hydro in my 35 Chevy Coupe back in early 1963. I believe the same setup would work in the stepdown if someone wanted to retain their Hydro with a SB Chevy engine installation. There would be no need to change shift indicator and possibly no need to modify the driveshaft. I raced that car on the street and track for 2 years and never had a problem with the B&M built hydro behind a blown SB Chevy.

It required removing the bellhousing from the Olds hyro and replacing it with a GM truck Hydra-Matic bellhousing. Eary Chevy and GMC trucks used Hyra-matics. Using the truck bellhousing on the Hudson hyro will allow it to bolt onto Chevy engine. But since the truck bellhousing bolt pattern to hydro rotated my trans a few degrees I needed the trucks oil pan and matching oil pickup to have a horrizontal botton on the pan. I have no idea why GM did that. I do not recall what the GM Hydro mounts looked like. The GM mounts and Hudson mounts may be similar, may be interchangeable???

I was just remembering something from the past that worked and may work on a modified stepdown or pre stepdown for someone wanting to use their Hyda-Matic transmission.

That was then. Today I would upgrade to an overdrive lockup converter transmission if I were to use a later model engine for my daily driver. Better gas mileage. I like better gas mileage. Lower RPM's for quieter running down the highway. I like quiet, better to hear the CD and conversation.

I'll say good night to you all.
