There was a short discussion on the 60-62ValiantLancerForum the other day about an ebay listing where the lister called his 61 Valiant the ugliest car ever made. Maybe he said it with pride I don't know but I wonder what the classic car community has to say about the subject.

I personally don't think the Vals or Lancers come close to being ugly(I also think English Bulldogs are beautiful). In my book the old Nash Metro has to be high on the uggo list. Let the poll know what you think. Instead of a beauty contest I propose an Ugly Poll.

Hi All,

they have a couple of places called "Meilenwerk" in Germany. It is a place where we as owners pay to store our collectible cars, either in open spaces or in special glass garages. Others pay to get in (like in a museum). You can take your car in and out any time. They have restaurants on those sites, vintage car dealerships, garages, retail stores and host car shows, swap meets and provide free meeting space for car clubs. Here is a link:

http://meilenwerk.de/

Do you think that would work here in the US?

What would you pay to store your car in such a place with security, AC, maintenance service etc. in open space / behind glass?

Do you know of any places in the US that offer something like that (haven't found any yet)?

What would be a good location for that?

Please give me your opinion. Who knows, maybe we can establish something like that here as well.

Keep cruisin'!

 SB 1549, as introduced, Florez. Smog check program: San Joaquin

Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District.

(1) Existing law establishes a motor vehicle inspection and

maintenance program (smog check), administered by the Department of

Consumer Affairs that provides for the inspection of all motor

vehicles, except those exempted from the program, upon registration,

biennially upon renewal of registration, upon transfer of ownership,

and in certain other circumstances. Motor vehicles manufactured prior

to the 1976 model-year are exempt from smog check requirements, as

provided.

This bill would exclude from this exemption those motor vehicles

registered by a new owner at an address within the boundaries of the

San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District on or after

January 1, 2009.

(2) Because violations by owners of motor vehicles currently

exempt from the smog check requirements would be a crime, the bill

would impose a state-mandated local program.

The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local

agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the

state. Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that

reimbursement.

This bill would provide that no reimbursement is required by this

act for a specified reason.

(3) This bill would make findings and declarations regarding the

inapplicability of a general statute within the meaning of Section 16

of the California Constitution.

Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: yes.
After passing a rolling 30 year SMOG exemption in the late 90’s, that bill was amended to freeze the exemption to 1976 and older cars. Now, the new plan is to lift the exemption on all years and require emissions on vehicles produced as far back as 1889. To make things interesting, part of the revenue from this program will go to crush cars. Let us know what you think….

After going through months and months of everyone's input regarding the ugliest car of all time, I thought it might be a nice positive change of pace to open a discussion on what the BEST looking car might be. In the interest of keeping the field narrowed down (otherwise we will wind up with as many different cars as people who post), I will limit this poll to ONLY NEW CARS that are sold in the United States. I am defining "new" as 2006 models and up to the present. They can be domestic or foreign.

As far as my votes are concerned, my preferences lean toward the more successful of the "retrocars" that are out there right now. Tied for first place, IMHO, are the latest Ford Mustang and the new Chrysler 300 Hemi C. Runner-up would be the 300-based Dodge Charger and Charger R/T.

It seems like Chrysler led the retro parade with the PT Cruiser (also not a bad-looking vehicle) and just keeps on doing it right. Between the remaining members of the big Three, only Ford seems to have answered the call to duty adequately with the new retro-Mustang and Mustang GT, and the retro Thunderbird would be right up there if not for the fact that one can actually get an original 55-56-57 'Bird driver in fairly decent shape for less money.

General Motors seems to have played the "follow-the-leader" role too much to be taken seriously with the Chevrolet SSR. The Chevy HHR (I think that's what it's called) is starting to enjoy moderate success, but has nowhere near the popularity of its rivals--at least in my little corner of the U.S.
