Hello all,

This is my first post... I was hoping that someone here would be able to help. The photo below was taken on April 19,1943 at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma. President Roosevelt visited and toured the factory, being driven down the line of aircraft in his convertible. My question- what year and model Packard is this?

Thanks so much!

hey packard pro's......we tackled my 38 packard (flathead 6 cyl) overheat problem today.... first checked for the thermostat in the top of the head, and found none....... then by the limited information in the packard service manual I reciently ordered, we were led to the shuttle valve or whatever it is on the top side of the radiator.... some one had a bolt wedged in it, holding the plunger to the pulled out position...we removed the wedged in bolt, and unbolted the rod which connects to this plunger thingy, and the plunger then went in........we started the car, let it run forever, and it never got over 175 degrees.....which is great..... so, that must be in the open position when the plunger is in.... anyway, the rod which connects to the plunger mechanism and runs back over the top of the radiator and to the front of the grill section is what we don't understand.... it will not move,,, must be froze up or something.....we really can't see where it is going or what it is connected to without removing some sheet metal,, which would be another major undertaking....... can someone kinda explain how this works to me....

I have a 1955 custom Hudson equipped with a 320 Packard V8.

It ran pretty good but was chocking down on take off and finally it quit on me. But would start back up and drive about a mile before it would stop again. I have put plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points and condenser, checked timing, checked compression (it is 95 to 120). Pulled the carburator, cleaned, adjusted, even hooked a container of fuel above engine and let it gravity flow to carburator. Fuel output from fuel pump to container has a good flow. Now after all of this I have a bad engine surge at all speeds. This car is a 6 volt positive ground.

Does anyone have any ideas or had a similiar experience with the 320. At this point I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Ok im Quite new here, i bought a 1956 Packard executive 4 dr.

To my knowledge it is a 352, and it has the carter carb, and autolite ignition.charging system. ( i heard they were that or delco ray?)

Anyways It wont turn over. it does nothing. i turn the key to the on position and the red light comes on above the key, but when i turn it to start it nothing happenes, no click no nothing.

I have rehooked the wires up to the ignition coil and distributer, What else should i look for and start with on my search for this problem.

The car is in neutral. (to my knowldege) ive been pushing it around. The old owner took the puchbutton tranmission control out and sold them. he cut a hole in the floor for a floor shifter. ( how hard is it to put in a floor sifter?) i think its a twin ultramatic. (it is automatic)

I may sound like a moron, but im just trying to put out what i know, hopefully it'll help a bit

A bit amusing

The car has sat in a garage for 30 years, then it belonged to the motion museum in south dakota( i have paperwork), for god knows how long, then it was brought to cleveland Ohio 3 years ago where it now sits.

I'm taking a seriously hard look at this car (despite the color combo - lol). It looks like a good price for a 50s American convertible but I'll admit I know very little about Packards. I spoke with the seller and according to him it has a NOM - a 1953. It also has a few mechanical dificulties but nothing I can't fix. He said he had driven it long distances on several occasions (400+ miles), so the basic mechanics are pretty good. He gave me a price substantially below the buy it now he had set. I can see a few things in the photos such as paint chips, etc (he sent me some higher res versions as well) but can anyone see anything I might have missed? What would be a good price for this car? Thanks! Andy

hey guys, I have a problem.... aquired a 38 packard 6 cyl coupe.. It had been stored in a shed for several years... got the motor, clutch , and water pump all freed up and new oil in it etc... put a battery in and couldn't get it started, because it turned over soo slow... pulled it and it started right up and ran great... drove it about a mile, the came back to the shop, and repaired a gas leak... THEN, it wouldn't do anything... even the headlights wouldn't come on. but, in checking it out and cleaning connections etc, the headlight will come on,,,,But, as soon as you hit the starter button, it will click slightly( I think the click is comming from the starter solonoid, but not sure) and everything go's dead again, including the headlights, which should burn anytime. Note, we hooked the battery up as a positive ground... can you give me any ideas where to start... We've already took the battery cables off at the starter etc and cleaned them good....

Over 2 months ago i asked if anyone here knew of a change in rear end gears to lower the RPMs on the engine. Over 140 views and not 1 reply.

Well now I have another problem. Lets see if I get any responses to this question.

While coming home from a car show, I had to slow down because a motorcycle got in front of me. I immediatly noticed a ticking coming from the engine compartment of my 1940 120. I pulled over and the engine was missing and wobbling and clacking like crazy. A quick look and we slowly made it home.

the sound is coming from around #1 cylinder and the water pump area.

I did a compression check, Arced each plug, checked the wiring and distributer - everything is ok.

Someone on the Hudson site here suggested the snubber could be broken inside the timing chain cover. I used a stethascope and the noise is not coming from there.

I live in a condo that will not allow me heavy duty mechanical work, so it must go to a shop for repair. I've spent 2 weeks and hundreds of phone calls trying to find a mechanic that knows flathead 8s. I might have to have it towed to a museum in Oxnard CA to get it done.

My new question is - does the 1940 flat head 8 have HYDROLIC LIFTERS?

I have been told it does but the language in the owners manual only says - PRESSURE LUBRICATED MUSHROOM TYPE LIFTERS.

I havent been to High School Auto Shop in 46 years. Can anyone here tell me - is that a yes or a no?

I ordered the Service Tech Manual but Kanter sent me the Owners Manual. With the car being 67 years old I really don't have to worry to much about 10000 mile tune ups and how to clean spots off the seats anymore.

Waiting to hear from someone

i just bought a 49 packard yesterday and have a few questions

how do i know if it's a super eight or just normal?

how many gears does it have, all i've found are 2 forward and one reverse on the collum shifter, is that it? or am i skipping one in there somewhere?

i changed the thermostat but it still reads between the middle mark and the H mark on the guage is that ok? i'm assuming that it's an old guage and not very accurate anymore. what would be the first signs of trouble if it is overheating?

the brakes throb some i havn't even taken the wheel off yet, but i would assume a warped rotor? if it even has rotors? or is it all drums??

great car so far, i'm sure i'll have more questions as time goes on, just starting to learn about it

I am having problems with an overheat problem. Radiator has been rodded, new thermostat, new radiator cap. I have a new waterpump ordered. Chemical block check show no signs of combustion gasses in the cooling system. Did these engines have any problems with passages in the block or heads?

My father purchsed a 1939 model 110 when new. He worked at the local Packard dealership, after the war he was Service Manager and had the car until he died and now I have it. He had a car garage for 54 years and continued to service many Packards. I do not have the time, space or money to restore the car and would like an idea of the value of this car. It runs very well, has new knee shocks, radiator, carb kit, fuel pump, needs a master cylinder. Absolutley no rust, always garaged, glass is good and the car would be worthy of a total restoration. Original interior, front seat covered in vinyl, paint actually buffs up OK. I have some of the original service manuals with the car.

I have a 1940 model 1801. The car does not overheat and cranks great when first started. After 20 to 30 miles when I try to start it, it cranks real slow - almost like the battery is dying. I've been told this is common with the old 6 volt systems and also that the problem is the started needs rebuilt. Help who's right?

Does anyone here know if the radiator cap on a 1940 should be a "Filler cap" or a "Pressure cap"?

Once the car warms up, I have water flowing slowly out of the overflow tube. The heat gauge reads OK but water continues to flow out. The cap now on it doesn't have the spring and seal on the bottom of it, so i don't think its reaching the seat.

Anyone have a Napa Auto store part number?
I know the bolt goes through can, but from under the car what goes on the bolt first, the washer, or the dome piece? Thank you, Dawgmanjack
