I just got a 1958 2 dr hard top packard with 20k orig miles that was from the orig owner and sat in a garage for 40 years with signed document from daughter! It has the last inspection sticker on it still from 1969 and I have the orig bill of sale and the car has not one rust spot on it and orig paint and possibly orig tires. Not sure if the tires were replaced once or not with the exact same ones as the spare is identical but worn. Car has a v8 (not sure what engine) and a 4 barrel carb. Options are p/s, p/b, auto, window washer, twin traction differential (posi), undercoat, white wall tires, heat and defrost, radio, rear seat speaker, wheel discs! I am looking for info on this car as I can't find one 1958 car anywhere aside from a wagon on ebay. I am curious about engine size and approx. value of one of these? Here are amny pics. Thanks

Hi all,

Great to see such a busy forum, feeling very alone here in Ireland, not to many Packards around these parts!

I have a problem I need help with. I have totally rebuilt the motor in my '34 Club Sedan, spending loads of money and time on it. Yesterday while out driving I noticed a lot of blue smoke when I drove off from traffic lights. I pulled out the spark plugs and found the back 4 badly oiled up. The front 4 are perfect. I have not checked compression, there are around 500 miles on the new engine (new pistons, rings, valves, etc, etc) but I dont think 4 cyclinders would be worn out or break rings together at once. The ignition is electronic, all 8 plugs share the same power source.

Before I go insane can anyone give me any ideas as to why the rear 4 are oiling up...................please!

I just finish installing a rebuild engine and the old ultramatic transmission in my 53' but i can't get the car running. When I put the car in any gear the engine stalls. The engine starts and runs excellent but as soon as you put it in gear it dies. What can be causing this?

Prior to engine and trans removal the car was running fine and the only thing i've done to the transmission was to replace the outer gaskets and disassamble the torque converter.

My only two guesses are: 1-theres something wrong with the torque conveter or the neutral switch in the transmission is wired wrong?

Some help would be appreciated

Our Florida scrap yard recently took in a 1941 Packard 110. The guys in the yard want to crush it. My opinion is that it would be a crime to scrap it. The body has some rust & has had some custom work done on the front end, but the car has lots of original parts that can be saved (glass, lights, dash, rear sheet metal & bumper, etc.). The engine is an original six that (I'm told) runs. Crushed value on the car is around $750.00. Is it worth saving?

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and was wondering if I could get some help. I have a 1951 Packard 200 that has been running fine. All of a sudden it will not start. The motor turns over, but will not fire. I checked and it does not look like I am getting spark. I have replaced the battery cables, distributor cap and rotor and the ignition coil. Still no spark. I have used my circuit testor and it lights up on the negative side of the coil with the ignition key on. When I crank the engine and put the testor on the positive side of the coil, it lights up. I tried to put the probe between the ignition wire to the distributor and the coil and I do not see it light up.

Can you think of any other tests or things I should try to replace? Could the new coil be bad out of the box? I do not have a lot of sophisticated electrical testing equipment. BTW the car has the original 6v positive ground setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey All,

I don't know much about Packard's, but my local salvage yard just (in the past week or two) received a practically complete Clipper Custom - 1955 I'm gonna hazard a guess (when comparing the hood ornament and taillight lenses against some Ebay auctions - I know, not a definitive way to ID stuff).

Most all of the body panels have cancer, but everything else looks to be there - script emblems (hood, fenders, trunk lid), interior (gauge cluster, window trim, tube radio, etc), bumpers front & rear (though in need of re-chrome), engine, and probably a lot more parts that didn't catch my eye. At least the passenger door windows are broken, but front and rear windshields are intact. If I remember correctly, the rear passenger door is slightly crunched from a small accident - I was still able to open it, but there is some impact damage.

If you want to check it out, or get in contact with the salvage yard, it's located in Hebron KY (outside of Cincinnati, OH) at a place called Bessler's - http://www.upullandsave.com/.

Thought I'd get the word out since I'm sure some people out there could use some/most/all of the parts.

1956 introduced the new Hawk series. The 1956 Hawks were a natural development from the 1953-55 coupe and hardtop (C & K bodies) models. The relative success of the Speedster convinced Studebaker-Packard that marketing a sporty line to compete with the Corvette and Thunderbird was a wise decision. Although the 1956 Corvette and Thunderbird were two place cars, the new five passenger Hawks were often compared to them, especially the Golden Hawk. Interestingly, in 1958, the Thunderbird dropped the two-place configuration and switched to the Hawks five passenger arrangement. Part of Fords decision was probably influenced by the fact that the 1956 Hawk line outsold both the Ford Thunderbird and the Chevrolet Corvette!
The new Hawk design came under the direction of Robert Bourke. It was Bobs last design effort for Studebaker. He developed the bold grille, the hood scoop and expanded the Speedster style instrument panel to include a metal turned facing across the full width of the dash panel.

Back in the late 1940's, Mrs. Joy (Henry B. Joy's widow) drove a 1911 (?) Detroit Electric around Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. The Joy estate, as I remember, had at least a 7 car garage with servants quarters above.

In spite of the fact that she had a driver and probably several cars at her disposal, she seemed to prefer to drive herself. The old Detroit was beautiful and was steered with a tiller bar. It had flower vases on each door post that were always filled with fresh flowers every time I saw it.

As I remember, she was very elderly when I saw her, which was probably only a couple times. I think she drove the Detroit to her hair dresser which was near my high school.

Does anyone have any idea what ever happened to her old Detroit? I saw one at the Imperial Auto Museum in Las Vegas several years ago, but it was in bad shape. The curator would never respond to my inquiries regarding it's origin. Could it have been Mrs. Joy's?

Just curious,
I purchased this car from Joy Lansing. She played the "dumb blonde" receptionist on the old Bob Cummings show. She was far from dumb and was a delighful lady when I met her. Unfortuanately, she died a early death from breast cancer.

The car ended up in the junk yard sometime around 1960 after I sold it. I did not know what I had back then. Wish I still had it.

If someone could use this in spite of the damaged cover, please e-mail me at gene1142@sbcglobal.net or call me on my Verizon cell at 619-972-5848.

I've heard all kinds of terrible things about the Ultramatics in the 55-56s. I'm considering buying a '55 patrician. The owner says that he shipped the transmission off to a professional Packard mechanic in Nevada, and he rebuilt it. Is it good to go, or will I be having problems with it?

I am looking for a car that I can use as an "almost" daily driver (no snow or ice). Something I can use to get around town but also take on tours.

I have located a 1939 One-Twenty that is very low miles and in excellent condition. My question is, can the One-Twenty go for a few hours at highway speed without over heating or just plain dying on me?

I'm not looking for something to take to Pebble Beach, just something I can enjoy without an excessive investment of funds and time. I currently have five cars including a 1947 Lincoln Continental V12 that is about to start restoration along with a '56 Ford that's just coming out of restoration. I'm not looking for another project; just something I can enjoy in all but the very worst Ohio weather.

Is the One-Twenty the car I'm looking for? All advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Howdy,

I'm going to purchase a classic car as a daily driver and after looking at all the classic cars, from old Fords to Cadillacs, I'm always drawn back to the early 50s Packards. There's nothing else like them. What I want to know is, can anything be done to the engines to increase performance by way of camshafts or supercharging?

Thanks,

I'm looking for a decent Packard to drop on my spare '56 chassis, and would like to find a '48-'50 Packard, preferably a 2 door, but a 4 door would work. Also, must be within 250 miles of Wichita, Ks. Does not need to run, or have engine, trans, or interior. I'd be willing to trade my 1956 supercharged Patrician for the right car.
The fuel tank in my 1940 Packard sat with fuel in for several years. It smells like a poor grade of varnish, but it does not leak. I am debating about tackling the clean up job myself. Radiator shops around here don't want to do fuel tanks anymore, but some will send them off and get them done - For a consideration, of course - a really BIG consideration! What are my chances of success with one of the kits for this purpose? Scruffybeast
