Don't know what this has to do with Hudsons, but I can see one out the window.

Just got a new gallon of Maple Syrup. Living here in the Adirondacks, we go thru at least one a year. We used to make it on the farm and sell it for $10. Now it's $45 and worth every penny if ya have to make it.

Had to go in the woods and tap (drill holes in) the trees with the snow right to your hips, drive spiles (wooden or metal tubes)hang buckets and covers and gather the sap every day at least. We used a horse pulling a 150 gal tank on a sled. Horse knew exactly where to stop, even within an inch or so at the 1000 gal storage tank. Some of it had to be gathered with a wooden yoke on your shoulders (hanging on my cabin wall) and 2, 5-gal pails hooked to crotched sticks hanging from ropes. And don't spill any! It took on average 40 gal of sap to make a gal of syrup. Most outfits use tubing and gravity today.

Sap was evaporated over a fire in an 'Arch' burning 4 ft wood, with large cast-iron doors and a big draft plate at the bottom. On top were large flat pans where it boiled until it smelled nice, then was carefully finished to 11 3/4 lbs/gal or around 220 deg. Strained and canned.

Maple Cream, Soft and Hard Sugar was boiled down more and stirred. A favorite was Jack Wax where you boiled it down until it 'Haired'. (formed a string or hair when poured from a spoon.) Then was spooned on pans of snow where it hardened into a taffy consistency to pick off with a fork and eat it. There were huge Jack Wax parties. I made some this week. You have to watch it like a hawk or it will boil over on ya and make a huge mess. As it boils it gets harder so you have to add a spoon or so of fresh syrup to make it soft again.

Dad used to stay up all night and boil. If it started to boil over, the fat in a few drops of milk would settle it. Or hang a piece of bacon over the pan at the right hight. Kinda miss those days, but it was a lot of work.

Vern, (Mud Road Sugar House, Johnstown, NY) The guy we get it from now, has a reverse osmosis machine he calls 'Sweetie'. It takes about 85% of the water out and makes a much faster process. Here's a pic of the Jack Wax I had tonite. You should try it.

Once the add expires and you don't receive your reserve price WHY THE HELL DO
YOU RELIST the car immediately for the same price or in a couple of cases RAISE the
minimum bid.?

Am I completely stupid and is this the new way of marketing being taught in schools these days or are we just seeing an abundance of EBay dimwits lately....

My Hudson survived the Tsunami. I was surprised that the Tsunami was as big as it was, I stayed up till 3:30 AM when it hit but watching it on TV it looked like it was going to be like the one last year which was only some large swells. In Kahului it actually went as high as 9-12 ft. and went inland about a 1/4 mile. No damage though just some flooding. I took some pics this early morning and one of them made the TV news.

I was over on Facebook this morning and saw a msg that wished Kelly Hinegardner Happy Birthday and how much he was missed - Kelly left us back in, what, August 2005.

Kelly was an original - there's never been anybody quite like him in the HET club and there never will be anybody like him. He could easily qualify for "Most Unforgettable Characters" stories that used to appear in Readers Digest.

Stories about Kelly are legion - he was an expert at changing the timing gears in 1937 Terraplanes, for example. I'd like to bore y'all to death with a few stories of my own.

I knew Kelly going back into the 1970's - as I recall I was looking for a lifter for an old Rambler and Kelly found out about it. Didn't have the lifter, but did drop me a letter telling me where I could find one. When I founded the New England Chapter Kelly was forming the North Texas Chapter at about the same time. Our chapters became sisters with North Texas people belonging to New England and vice versa.

In the 1980's there was some dissension and political upheaval in the club and I dropped out of both club and the New England Chapter. One day about a year later this fellow on a motorcycle showed up in my driveway - I met Kelly for the first time and by the time he left he'd convinced me I should rejoin club and chapter - he said I had something to contribute. Must have known something I didn't.

One of the fondest memories I have of Kelly is the first National meet I attended at York, PA, in 1988. Was going to the banquet, but ended up at an all you could eat place nearby with Kelly, Lou Backhaus, Charley Woodruff and Bill Hafker. Came about 9 or so they wanted to close the place for the night - by then a fellow from New York and his wife had joined out table. Our waitress had also joined out happy bunch of HudNuts and was learning all about Hudsons from Kelly.

Yeah, I miss Kelly very much. My wife was not wild about roving HET'ers staying overnight at our house - but Kelly was the one exception, which says a lot. He was always welcome at our house.

I know you're up there at that big Hudson meet in the sky still raising cain and having a blast. And Kelly, I still got that Rambler hub cap you sent me back in the 1970's!!!!

A few posts got me thinking today so I have to ask this question. If I build a car, I do the very best that I can and try to do two things while I am working out in the shop. First and most important is that I try to learn and have fun. Second is that I try to keep the cost below what it would sell for so if it has to become an investment I can recover costs. It is getting harder and harder to keep the costs in line with profit lately. I know for me, there are items that I must take out for someone else to do. Chrome comes to mind. I factor all this into the cost. I do all that I can do myself and that is the big factor in saving money. Now, let's get down to the real question. Let's speculate for a minute that a "phantom" Jet Convertible ends up in my yard in the condition that the "real" one was in. It would be way over my experience base to restore that car. Do I pass on it because it is a "one-of-a-kind" car or do I do the best job I can do and enjoy my project before, during and after it is complete? Is it more important in our hobby to have fun and experience the build or are there certain cars that should go to someone with the funds to have it professionally restored? Wondering what your thoughts are?

Hi folks,

It would appear that there are two suppliers of running board mats for my 1935 Terraplane Coupe and was wondering if anyone has ordered running board mats from either of these companies.

Metro has them but they are well over $500.00 US$ for the pair as compared to K-GAP who has them for $380.00 US$.

Would like to know what your experience was if you have tried either of these companies products and how the service was?

Thanks for your comments!

Fitting 34/35 Headlight Lenses - A Dire Warning !

A few weeks back I posted a wanted ad for a replacement headlight lens for my '34 Hudson LTS Series. I also posted a request for tips on how to tackle the tricky task of installing headlight lenses on 34/35 cars. I've got a tip of my own to impart to you now.
A kind HET'er came up with a pair of "generic" replacement lenses that fitted a number of different mid-30s makes including Hudson and I thought my prayer had been answered.
However, disaster struck.
The new lenses were slightly thicker than the old ones and therefore needed a thinner reflector gasket. I didn't appreciate this until I came to put one in. It fractured under virtually no pressure. Using a thinner gasket, the other one went in like a dream.
So, when fitting a new headlight lens whether OEM or not, please take warning and check how thick it is and make sure it's compatible with your reflector gasket. Similarly, if replacing the reflector gaskets, make sure they're no thicker than the original or else you could end up like me !
So, I now have one Tribeam and one generic lens fitted - a rather odd appearance - and I'm back to the drawing board on finding another Tribeam lens or another pair of compatible lenses.
Can anyone helpme find them, please ? Have you a 34 Hudson or Terraplane lens you'll sell me ?
Has anyone used non OEM lenses in their 34 Hudson or Terraplane and what were they actually intended for ?
The dealers are asking prices of $150 - $299 for ONE Tribeam lens, so I'm not intending to submit to that sort of piracy until I've exhausted the other possibilities.
Thanks very much,
David.

Press Release, North Pole:

Santa Claus announced this morning that he is being forced to cancel his annual toy flight.

He cited the current business recession, lack of corporate donations and government environmental rules and security regulations enacted since Sep. 11, 2001. He also said that part of the problem is the failure of the Obama administration to provide bail out funds.

In addition Santa also pointed out he has had to shoot the reindeer to feed his elves, thus making his annual trip a near impossibility.

As some of you can tell, we have been working on making Internet Explorer a bit easier to use with the forum. In addition, we have made numerous upgrades to the system and patches this weekend. You can see from the blue skin that we are working from the base files.

I think you will find that the file attachment feature is working properly now for Internet explore. As a problem earlier with this function. Please tried out and see if you don't find that it works better now.
