I just bought a 1941 hudson six (175 CI) deluxe 6 passenger. I am trying to get it running and am looking for a few things and any advice someone might have to a new Hudson owner. Does anyone have a thermostat or thermostat gasket, a fuel pump to block gasket. I believe this car is a 6 volt positive ground system, correct me if I am wrong. Does anyone use an 8 volt battery in these cars. Where can you find shock absorbers/springs as the car is pretty floaty when rocked back and forth. That's it for now any help would be greatly appreciated, I have just joined the club also, thanks.

Worried by a fellow HET'er's dire story about the fracture of the timing gear on his '37, I obtained an aluminium timing gear from the Railton Owners Club for my engine rebuild.
I'm rather disappointed with the result. Although the engine runs with a reassuring "thrummm", I'm getting an awful metallic screeching from the front end that seems to come from the timing gear.
Does anyone have any experience of using these replacement aluminium timing gears ? Do they bed in and quieten down after the engine has been used for a while ?
Or am I going to have to find an original plastic gear and take the front end off the car again (Oh, no !) to put it in ?
I used to have a boxed NOS plastic gear but I gave it away......sigh.

Last week I sent Steve Engel, HET Radio guru, my radio for servicing. I was wrapped well in bubble wrap in an box with more bubble wrap. Steve called yesterday and said it had arrived damaged, luckly I did insure it, but apparently it had been dropped and whacked. Steve has been able to fix the damage but I am hearing more and more that UPS is becoming really unreliable in handling packages. Steve said he now calls them OOPS due to all the radios he had gotten that have had rough treatment. He now recommends USPS (priority mail), FEDEX air or ground service. Oddly I have used USPS and had very good luck with them, except MAKE sure you insure the package, not for damage but for loss. I have had two items just disappear, one a 308 cast iron head! Otherwise the stuff seems to get there in good shape.

Am I the only one who is annoyed with the inadequacy of proper lighting in the work area? Incandescent, florescent, halogen lighting ..... I have tried them all and remain annoyed by the fact that when I am working in confined areas on a car that the illumination provided is either insufficient, blinding or associated with searing heat. Normal incandescent bulbs go out with the slightest bump. Even the “tough” incandescent bulbs I tried quit when dropped, typically when I am working in the most awkward position. And while those curly florescent things are more robust the light they provide is either too dim or too bright. Halogen lights are like a mini-sun, dangerously hot and fragile.

There may not be a satisfactory solution for this dilemma. Yet when poor lighting converges with my mechanically challenged skills the results are anything but pleasing.

A while back there was mention on the forum of phoney package emails floating around. I can't find it at the moment but be advised these emails are still coming around. This is a phishing expedition.

In the past 3 days I've gotten one telling me a package was mailed via FedEx and should be at my home in 10 days; today I got one, same msg, only using DLH. The consist of the address and an attachment you can open to get a tracking number - the only tracking that attachment will be their path into your little computer world, I imagine.

These are so obvious that even old pharts like myself who are nearly blind can spot them. There are email addresses for a lot of people and the format is nowhere near what FedEx (at least - I've gotten tracking notice emails from them in the past) uses. FedEx, for example, does not use an attachment to access the tracking number.

Just a heads up.

Looking for any good suggestions to remove mothball stink from upholstry out of a 52 hornet sedan. Moth ball smell makes my wife ill, and the car is kept in the same garage as her car. its snowing and cold here in WI. I cant open the windows and air it out insside the garage often as it makes everything else stink bad. I pulled out the seats adn moved them to unheated pole shed. im thinking im going to have to pull the door panels and perhaps even the headliner down too.

any methods you guys use to remove the stink, not just cover it up?

also on the same note, any good methods to deep cleaning teh original style upholestry as well without damage?

thanks
