This is an old racing slick from my dads stash. It's hard to see from the pictures and rust, but the rivets were drilled out and the center of the wheel was moved inward over 1" where it looks like it was welded back in. The tire was has no wear on it. Maybe I'll blast the rust off and use it for garage art.
I guess this is how it was done back in the day.

So with this in mind I was wondering how gas prices might effect attendance at our 100 yr Hudson party even though it's a once in a lifetime thing? Academic curiosity.

A belated Happy Father's Day to all!

Do you have any 'fathers day' related activities to share?

Here's mine -
My younger daughter called me about 8:15 AM (before she went to work), wishing me a Happy Father's Day, and letting me know that she would stop by that evening...

Well, about 20 minutes later she called back - crying. Her car wouldn't start, and her boss needed her there for the 'Fathers Day' rush (CheezeCake Factory). Well, after she calmed-down, she was able to borrow her roommate's car & get to work.

I went over to her place, and managed to stretch the jumper cables over the hood of a truck, and they were just long enough to get to her car and get it started. Took me about 5 minutes just to find the latch to open the hood. Empty gas tank- no movement from the gauge, and the warning light is on, solid. Took off with the car, to put some gas in it.
Got to the gas station, got it filled & kept car running ($75 + change fill-up - it takes premium, of course  ). And as got ready to drive away, car died - would not start. Yep, you're RIGHT - I left the jumper cables in MY car...

Took Lily for a walk (did I mention I had taken our little mutt with me?), while trying to get in contact with someone who could help me. Just happened to see & flag down a passing county policeman - he had a set of jumper cables, and was very willing to help. Got it started, but it quit again... (too many gadgets running in this fully decked-out Nissan Maxima). Shut off whatever I could (?), and we re-jumped the car. This time it stayed running, and I was able to get it back to her house - parking it so that it would be easier to work-on or get jumped.

Went back home, dropped off 'Lily' and got my tools. Went to CostCo and bought a battery, drove back to my daughter's place & put the new battery in.

Went back home, and 'mellowed out' for the remainder of the afternoon. Daughter stopped by and gave me a big kiss, 'thank you', and a Fathers Day card. (No $$ exchanged hands - not really expected. )

Not a normal "Fathers Day" but a relatively typical father's day... If you know what I mean.

P.S. Believe it or not, it cost less for the battery than it did to fill the tank with gas!

Last weekend I drove up to Indy to help out a friend. By "help", I mean take an un-wanted vehicle off his hands. It is a 1978 VW camper he has had for about 10 years. The engine was completely rebuilt about 8 years ago, and it has barely been driven since 2003. The arrangement was that he would give it a good once over to make sure that it was up for the 300 mile drive back here. Upon arrival, I was going to follow up and finish anything he couldn't get to.

We arrived about 10PM friday night. Saturday at noon, we headed over to the storage unit he had the bus in. It took about 2 hours to get the bus emptied and out of the unit. He has every nook and cranny packed with tools, parts, and whatever else he didn't have a home for. Needless to say, he never got around to doing any prep with the bus. It started right up, but wouldn't idle and the clutch was so far out of adjustment that you could barely get it into any gear. After calling around to a 1/2 a dozen auto parts stores, I found that there was not a clutch cable to be had in Indy. After an oil and filter change, I called it a day.

Sunday morning, I found some M8 nuts in the spare part he had and spaced out the clutch cable to get it set right. I serviced the K&N air filter, set the points, set the timing, and tensioned the fan belt. After all that, the idle stabilized and the shifting was smooth. The brakes, tires, and lights were all good. At this point, I decided we were ready to go. I had packed all sorts of tools and had spare parts for most of the common failures. We hit the road on Sunday just before 2:00 PM. My 11 year old daughter rode with me in the bus while the rest of the family followed in the brand X. The bus ran flawlessly, and got about 18MPG. We passed a total of 2 cars over 300 miles of interstate, 1 suburban driving about 50 and a loaded semi climbing a steep grade at about 45. The semi passed us again about 5 miles down the road.

Driving a VW bus is quite an experience. If you don't get a wave, you're garenteed a smile or a Peace sign if your lucky. It doesn't drive nearly as nice as a Hudson that is 30 years older, but it's fun in it's own right.

Not that I needed another project, but it was to hard to pass it up. My 2 older daughters have very fond memories of this bus and will never let me live down selling our favorite one.

Required Hudson content: The trip made me anxious to get the Hudson out for a longer trip in the near future.

Since I am looking for a decent parts washer, it always hits a sore spot for me I need to rant about! Maybe I'm in the wrong...but here's my story...

Some 13 years ago I was working on an intake manifold replacement on a truck I owned so I asked my grandfather if I could borrow the parts washer he had in his garage for oh..I don't know about 10-15 years.

So as I'm hauling the thing home, I stopped by the local auto parts store to pickup 15 gallons of solvent. The parts store was right next to my buddies bodyshop so I went inside the bodyshop first to say hello.

When I came out, 2 guys in suits came out from the parts store and started asking me questions about the parts washer in the back of my truck.

IT seems (or I was lied to by these SK employees) at the time that Safety Kleen only leased their equipment and you couldn't "own" one and since the parts washer was "legally" theirs that they were going to take it or call the police. I'll note here...they did point out a stamping in the back of the tub that said "Property of Safety Kleen..."

Today, I'd probably call them out on that and get the Police involved - because I can garuntee my grandpa didn't steal that parts washer...he might not have know about SK's policies, but he would never steal - it wasn't in his nature ~ but I was much younger then and didn't feel I had any fallback given the stamping on the unit, the credentials I was presented that these dirt-bags actually worked for SK.

I was so PO'd at myself for not just taking the unit home first since it was a 50/50 choice to stop by the parts store on the way home or after I dropped the parts washer off...

I was so ashamed of myself~ I never told my grandpa I lost his parts washe because he had gotten very sick, and died 6 months after and I could never bring myself to tell him.

So now I'm looking around for a good parts washer...just for the heck of It I looked on SK's website...they now sell their parts washers to the masses

So, I tell this story to try to put a little dent in SK's corporate karma for having policies at the time that took my grandpas parts washer from me, to now where their cheapened products to a point they are sold to the masses.

SK will never see a penny of my money.

List of Companies I won't do business with...

* Safety Kleen
* Verizon

OK, what is the point? I don't get it? In your own way everyone contributes. No matter if it is here on this forum or in the club everyone takes something away and contributes something. Even if you don't think you have a voice (or not as large a voice as you would like) you contribute by getting people to think... and that is not the point of a club or forum. If you are willing to support this with your membership great, if not that is your decision. Just respect the various points of view and be civil, is all that is asked no matter what camp you are in. I get a great deal out of both places, the forum which is free and the club. I do not always participate as I should or as often as I like. That said one last thing, if you have given one piece of advice or one bit of encuragement you have advanced the Hudson cause, club or not and is that not the point.

Local Club - Insurance

When I went to get insurance on teh Pacemaker, the insurance company asked if I was a member of a local car club. I stated I was a member of the National HET but this level of membership is not accepted. So i asked about the definition of "local club."

This is what I got. "A club that holds it's regularly scheduled meetings within standard driving distance from the garaged location of the vehicle to be insured." Standard driving distance is defined as that limit set by Federal government for calculating commuting distance. This is 50 miles.

So, no HET chapter within 50 miles of my garage. Not that it really matters as it would have only given me $5.00 off my $133 per year premium. Valued Hudson at $20,000 for a total replacement. Used the sales price of Mr. Albrights wonderful cars as an example of a target replacement vehicle. the insurance underwriter agreed.

Anyone up for a "Flood City" chapter of HET?

By the way, I will probably join the Blair County Antique Auto Club to get some more local help with learning how to set the points when it comes time to replace them.

Hello All!

Rambo Dog

Rambo seems to be doing ok, we've got the stiches out from the surgeries now and his first week of chemo therapy under his belt.

Although, chemo for dogs is no-where near as dibilitating as the nasty stuff humans get he us on a 6 month cocktail of Pregnisone (steroid), Lukeran (human cancer drug) and believe it or not Pepcid ~ it does have an affect on his thirst and appetite. He's drinking at least 4-5x more water a day and it all has to come out somewhere

50 Super 6

It looks like my initial outlay of cash for Rambo's treatment is going to manageble - so I've decided to re-adjust my plans again get the 50 Super 6 running for this summer:D

So, I went out in the shop a couple of nights ago and was getting the 50 situated to put up on jackstands and remove the wheels and tires to do start the work on the front disc brakes.

You all know the old drill... get the floor jack... kneel down on the hard concrete (if you're lucky)... stand on your head to find a decent jack point on the front of a step down that will allow you to put 2 jackstands simultaneously under the front (I usually use a piece of wood and "gingerly" jack it on the front carriage/centerpin cover - yikes!)...

Anway, I get the front jacked up and grab the 2-ton stands I use, when I was wrangling them in under the front sub-frame I felt my lower back tweak a little - grrrrrrr

SO - later that evening - nursing my sore lower back, I visited my local Craigslist again and located a Snap-on mid-rise scissor-lift like pictured here - but slightly used!

Ends up the guy is only about 5 miles from my house, so I boogied over there at 9:30 PM on FRiday night - looked it over and said, I'll be here Saturday morning to pick it up!

I'd prefer a 2 or 4 post - commercial shop lift, but this is a neat alternative and is somewhat "portable"

This will lift 6000 lbs so the Hudsons should site really well on this unit, it's no good for transmissions or clutches...I'll still be wallowing on the floor like a beached whale for those jobs  - but for brakes, body-work, painting and such this lift will be perfect.

After the 1st surgery he's been eating like a horse - 2x a day - when normally I only feed him 1x...then yesterday he just turned his nose up at the food I made him and didn't eat at all.

I was concerned only because he didn't eat - not because of his behavior - so this morning I made him some more food with grated cheese on top...still didn't eat it...so I boiled some lean hamburger and mixed that in - he scarfed it down like he hadn't eaten in a week - not 1 day...oh and he did get treats that 1 day too!

I just started laughing because that tells me he's just feeling better and getting back to his ol' spoiled behavior - most of the time I just put warm water in the dry food and mix it up, but he gets tired of the same food over and over and then I need to add something to it...cottage cheese, grated cheese for a day or so...oh yeah - he won't drink room temperature water either...it has to be fresh cold water from the tap or fridge!

Don't get me off base - I have always fed him a hi-performance diet that has 30-40% protein and 30-40% fat w/ very little carbs 20-40% on average.

This freaks alot of people out as the average dog foods are running Low Protien (<20%) , Low Fat (<20%) and High carbs (>60%)... but he doesn't have an ounce of fat on him and most people don't think he looks or acts like he's 8 years old.

Here's some new pictures...thought I'd better chronicle this chapter of his life as well.

Thanks to all who replied or read through the other thread.

Rambos doing well, sadly we found out today the lump on his side was at Stage 2 and cancerous so it's not over yet

The most likely course of action is another surgery to remove another layer surrounding the area, followed by chemo - but, at least it's a low enough stage that I can take time to research and understand my options going forward.

Which brings me to my next point I am going to put whatever money and time I need to getting the dog healthy so think I am going to sell my 50 Super 6 that I was planning on driving this summer.

1950 Super 6 4dr w/Super Matic, engine runs, doesn't drive.
1 new oil change
2 nearly complete twinh setups (make 1 good one sell the rest)
1 Pridemore Disk Brake Kit (kit only - not installed)
Some rust - but not a rust bucket, this is a good driver level project car.

IF anyone is interested in the 50 Super 6 for the car and extra parts I want 4200.00 - I won't diker on the price- it's what I have into it and I'll use the money for Rambos care.

I can provide towing for cost of fuel anywhere within Wa/Id/Or (maybe some extra for time if the distance is too far)

I just noticed a small lump on his drivers side ear (left ear) a couple of weeks ago and now it's the size of a pencil eraser and getting bigger so regardless it's got to go.

He'll have a divot in his ear, but I told the doc not to cut his ear down just to make it look good cosmetically - just do the best you can and leave as much intact as possible.

There's another small lump he's had on his passenger side (right side) for the last couple of years that hasn't changed size, but since he'll be going under GA I asked them to take that one out too...then they'll send both samples in to make sure neither are cancerous.

I know this is routine stuff but I've never had to deal with having an animal recover from surgery, he'll have to wear one of those "halos" for a couple of weeks.

These days when buying tools you really have to consider shipping in the equation vs. buying locally etc.

I was in need of a new engine stand as all I had one of the cheapo tripod style engine stands that work ok (if you don't have to move or turn the motor over ) that I bought some 20+ years ago

I had the 454 on the tripod and it was scary trying to do anything and I ended up dumping the motor over when I moved

Now - somehow the top has vanished (due to loaning out tools) so I said the heck with it time to step up and get a new one.

I was looking at 4wheeled HF 1000lb+ stands for around 110.00 - and thought why not see what a geared engine stand costs..HF doesn't sell one.

I checked Northern Tool, Eastwood, etc. Most stocked a Sunex model for approx 250.00 but the kicker was shipping was 150+

I checked Sears, their lowest priced geared engine stand was $1700.00

Then I located an ATD model online, called a local distributor and they told me that they sold to NAPA, Shucks, Autozone etc.

So I looked up NAPA online and they have their signature brand lifting equipement and a 1000lb geared engine stand for 250.00 online.

I called my local NAPA store and asked the price and availability - 199.00 (on sale right now) and it was in the warehouse - instant satisfaction!

SOLD! 90.00 more than the HF model but with the worm drive. Priceless!
What's the deal? I'm feeling left out, because usually I am the one that causes this kind of animosity on this board, and now it's stealing the thunder...

Here's my take on it and the start of yet another thread...

Why don't we use this thread to offer suggestions for areas of improvement, or even ideas that would generate new interest in the HET club. Why don't we take this time as an opportunity to look for new membership, find ways to get others that are not members of the HET club, to become members, and even look at ideas for ways the club may be able to make membership more appealing to those that don't feel the club may have enough to offer to them.

I know in the past, I have been a intigator of problems, maybe even, but I think this is a wonderful time to try and get everyone together under one big, happy HET umbrella.

I believe the cookie ticket said something like...

"Good things come in small packages, expect yours to arrive today"

Driving home today with the big Dually I hit a pretty good rain sqaull - so I slowed from 65 to 50 coming up on this squall and a freeway off-ramp where traffic always backs up.

I'm in the fast lane with at least 10 car lengths in front of me - ie. no one - when out of my peripheral vision I saw 2-cars hit each other just ahead to the right - so I let off the throttle, and sure enough the guy in the center lane with a truck/camper- horse trailer (loaded) pulls directly into my lane NOTE: at this point he is already involved in the accident, but pulls in my lane anyway?

I have no where to go at 50mph but down the median and right into the cable barrier, where I took out 2 stantions and came to rest with both axles buried in the mud.

I got out - looked at the truck, got back in and started it up, put it in 4 low and drove right out of the muck.

Although, I hit no cars and I was not the cause of the accident I went ahead and waited for the State patrol - I didn't need someone clamining it was my fault because they "saw me drive off" after sliding down in the median.

So far the only cosmetic damage to the truck is a ding in the front bumper, a couple of scratches in the front fender flare from the cables and it broke the center cap off my right front wheel.

I already dropped the truck at the shop because the steering wheel was out of alignment - most likely a bent tie-rod as it tracked straight down the highway at 60mph, with no shaking, pulling or other problems than the wheel position after the "incident"

So I think I'll come out of this with less than a 500.00 bill and my truck intact ~ then maybe I'll see if I can get my money back, but I'm just glad I came out of it virtually unscathed compared to what could have happened.

Can somebody that knows 1940 Hudson coupes check on e-bay for me and tell me if the pair of fenders there look like they would fit. I think my eyes are playing tricks on me. I keep going in and out of the house with the picture in my hand but I can't be certain. The gentleman says he's not sure what they will fit.
