I'm looking for a good rebuildable starter to fit a 1949 262 3spd Super Six that I will ultimately have converted to 12 volts. Does anyone have an extra one?

I just got my '49 on the road again with the latest round of fixes, and my starter (which I rebuilt/converted to 12V last year) is not sounding real happy. It just seems to be making too much noise. It certainly doesn't sound as good as it used to.
You can email me at 'HETdoug.seals@design-concepts.com' (remove the HET)
Looks like the part numbers are 301308 for the plunger (looks like a small piston) and 300142 for the spring. If anyone has some spares from a junk engine I would be glad to purchase same.

I took some time to update my webpage tonite.

For those who may not know this ... there are several pages to my website. You have to scroll around to find some of them. Check for weblinks throughout the pages.

Another thing I have done is to add a 40 page parts interchange to the site. This has been on the site for about two months and I was trying to determine if visitors actually look at the text to see updates. I do not have a what's new byline so I will let you find that gem.

The interchange book is dated and it is the work of many fine Hudsonites who proceeded many of us in our interest in these cars. Be patient and understand the recommendations are just that ... a part that worked for the contributor ... or maybe worked for some other Hudson owner and is being passed on. If you recognize the value of knowing what might have worked before ... you are in luck as now you have a potential source for the part.

A final word ... it is obvious to some and a pure mind bender to others that most of the recommendations in the interchange will be difficult to find ... cross referencing to another replacement may not be possible ... and the biggest of the concerns ... the counter person usually KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT HUDSONS... so make them converts ... treat them gentle and ask for their help ... you will be amazed how far that will go in helping the right part move from obsurity to your car.

Good Luck

I was also breaking the bendix nose cone until I investigated the cause.

When switching to 12-volts the bendix will spin out FASTER and HARDER and if the center carrier-bearing (thrust side ) is not properly shimmed the bendix gear will go out to far and hit the nose-cone-housing.

FIX:

Move the bendix all the way out towards the nose-cone and if the gear hits the cone then it will thrust it so hard when activated it will break the cone. Add washers to the inside of the center bushing holder to get at least .080 between the bendix gear and the nose-cone. ( with the bendix all the way towards the cone. ( the gear should never hit the cone ) Use the FIBER-washers to get proper setting .

NOTE: To slow the started down a little i use a 12-volt cable made at least 6 ft long and run it down the side if the frame before going to the starter.

My starter is 12 years old and no problems as of yet.

Just got back from the Orange Blossom Chapter meet at Weeki Watchee Spriings Fl. 20 cars at the motel! Great time had by all. Our 49 Super six made the round trip of about 300 miles in fine shape. 65-70 MPH on the Interstates and Turnpike.Twin H gives about 15 MPG with OD. Only problem was on the way back on the Fl.Turnpike. We lost the right rear fender skirt. No clue why it fell off, but I wasn't going back after it! The last I saw of it, it was spinning wildly down the tight hand lane with a ton of cars running over it. Sooo, I need a right side skirt for a Super. The day before we left, I broke the nose off the 308 automatic starter on the Hollywood we are redoing. Any of these parts you might have, send me an email. 'preciate it..

Hi folks,

I'm at the point where I am ready do start connecting linkages and wiring to my '47 C8 Sedan with a 1951 stepdown 232 engine (it's what I had) What I was wondering is if anyone had instructions on how to connevt the shifting linkages to my 232 w/ OD. Seems the shift lever isn't quite long enough. I got the steering already hooked in and I have the cluch and break pedals in as well. Plus I'm not sure what to do about the speedo cable...weather to use the '47 cable or the stepdown one????? I also would like a wring diagram or at least instructions from anyone that has hooked up a step-down engine for 12Volts in a '46-'47 car. I'm sure it's similar to step-down 12V conversions but anything that is particular to '40's Hudsons' I'd like to know.

Thanks ahead of time for any help you cn give,
