Bobby Hadsky lives 3 blocks from me; I wanted to share
this story with you avid readers & Hudson lover's too!!
Local man winner of Great Race

July 11, 2004

Last year, Germantown resident Bobby Hadskey helped bring the Great Race road rally to his hometown.

This year he brought home the event's grand championship trophy.

Hadskey, 50, navigator of the Rock N Roll Race Team, along with driver G. R. Pike of Searcy, Ark., captured the championship last weekend when the 14-day rally ended in Monterey, Calif.

The victory came after the pair, driving a 1916 Hudson Indy Racer, finished second in the Expert Division four of the previous 10 years they competed.

"We knew we had a chance to win it five days before the end," Hadskey said last week. "From then, it was ours to lose."

Ninety-four cars left Jacksonville, Fla., on this year's 4,200-mile run from Jacksonville to Monterey, race officials said.

The rally is based on precision, calculations, navigation and teamwork. Fast is not a factor because cars must be at least 45 years old. The goal is to reach spots on the route in specific times.

It took the age of the Hadskey/Pike car - the second-oldest in the race - to capture the title.

The local team finished in a dead heat with Dale and Susan McClenaghan, a husband-and-wife team from Livonia, Mich.

The couple was driving a 1939 Ford Deluxe convertible, and in case of a tie, the older car gets the nod.

"We old-carred them," Hadskey said.

The team faced obstacles from replacing a clutch and the car's rear end - twice - to the stress of holding the lead.

Hadskey said he would rather move up from the pack than deal with the pressure of running in front.

Wayne Stanfield, chief operating officer for the race, said organizers were "tickled to death" that Hadskey and Pike won because they had finished second so many times.

Hadskey and Pike collected about $56,000 during the victory run, including $40,000 for the grand championship. But the pair has spent more than that over the years on the pricey hobby.
