Just wondering if any of you knew the idle speed of a 55 chevy bel air. Mine is currently idleing at about 1100-1200 in park and around 500-700 in gear. Wasnt sure if this is the norm for a straight six. This is my first project keeping the six cylinder in; instead of pulling it for a 350. Any way if anyone knows any ideas on this or if it is a problem that I need to be fixed. Just some more background on it; there is new intake on it and dual headers. The dwell and timing have been set, not 100 percent sure on the timing; but it has ran better since we adjusted it. Also has dual carbs on the intake. Thanks all

Whats up guys, I own a 68 chevy caprice with a 396 motor which runs pretty good, the only problem is it seems to be lacking in the power department. I've always admired classic cars and I found this one for a steal. The motor is bone stock besides new distributor, plugs and wires. I just don't understand why it seems like a kitten compared to my friends stock 86 monte carlo SS with a 350. He'll smoke his tires all the way up the block. Mine won't even burn out if I floor it . I want more power out of this motor but just don't know where to start..any ideas? As you can tell I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I'm eager to learn.
Greetings,

I have a 1962 Impala 4r hardtop with an unoriginal 350 engine in it.

I am having trouble keeping it running, the only way i can get it to start is to spray starter fluid in to the carb.

Then after i get it to start it lets loose an ungodly amount of white smoke literally to the point of having to turn the car off or i would die.

I have no Mechanical experience with cars,I am a computer guy,

I found a few post about similar problems but am not sure how to apply them to my situation and some of the technical terms confuse me.

Getting the car to start and stay running smoothly is my main concern i will need to get the dash electronics hooked up but that will come later.

(the guy i bought it from left the dashboard a mess i have a bunch of bulbs and knobs hanging from underneath and i have no clue what they are, what they do or where they go.)

If anyone can offer help i would greatly appreciate it like i said overall help would be nice but my main goal is to just to be able to start it smooth and keep it that way then i will move on to the rest.

Oh i have an edlebrock carb i think it is a 4 barrel iam not sure how to identify the model of the carb, and i have a LOT of gas poring into the carburator and around it and it is so bad it is pooling on the engine block. If i need to provide more information please let me know this is my dream car and i would love to have it up and running when I get out of college. my email is kazuma080@live.com

As you all may have seen from some of my earlier threads, I'm restoring a 1970 Pontiac Catalina..Its been quite a fun project, however parts have been hard to come by, quality not meeting my standards, not to size etc. So, when you find a company that offers something you need, you get tickled pink! When you place an order and dont receive your order and contact the company numerous times via email, and by phone and get no resolution it takes away from the excitement! Am I wrong? Well this years "Worst Customer Service Award" goes to Noah Performance

http://www.noahperformance.com/ Its been over a month since Ive placed my order, Noah dosent return my calls, nor my emails and still hasnt refunded my money back to my account? Ive finally turned it over to my bank, dissputing the charge. The funny thing is I had a grocery list of parts to put on order! The economy must be back in an up-swing and we can pick and choose whom we do business with? Maybe its my charming personality? Either way, back to the drawing board, I'm ever looking for the next small business entrepreneur worthy of my thousands of dollars of needed vehicle upgrades. Noah Performance two thumbs down.

What is the safest way to put them on? ,It looks like when one of the bolts are removed on the arm on the hood, while the hood is open, the one end of the spring hooks on the body and the other will reach the hood arm, pivoted down. Then I assume the arm needs to be forced back up to the correct position to replace the bolt. Is this the best way? Fingers are precious these days,
Would anyone know where i can get information on the car model itself? and anyone have any idea on how much i should put a price tag on it? Any and all information you'll all can give would be most helpful.

What i know so far is its either a super or a regular rocket 88 with all orginal parts, tranny, motor, body etc. Its been garage kept for years but still has rust in several places. The engine is seized but it was taken to a mechanic and he told us that it is possible to get it turn.(so im guessing its not done?) The guy im helping selling has the title its just currently lost in his house, but hes going to find it before ill put it up on ebay. the frame itself has surface rust but doesnt appear to have anything more then that... i dunno how i could check that? im also going to try and get sum pics to see if that'll help so lemme know if they aren't up with this post. thanks yall i also have more of them if some one would like to see more of the car

This is my first real car and i am learning quickly, its a 1978 chevy nova with a 1970 chevy 350 smallblock. yesterday i noticed coolant leakage on the ground so i filled it back up, on the way home steam was coming into the car through the defroster vents and coolant started coming into the car then when i pulled into the garage it all spilled out onto the garage floor. i did a little research and my best guess is that it is the heater core. i called the guy i bought the car from and he said he put a new heater core in it as well as new tubing. a friend said that i could just get a piece of tubing, and take both hoses and run them into each other(the heater in and out). before i take apart the heater box and firewall i'd like to get some input on this, thanks!

I wanted to start a general thread for anyone looking to rebuild an engine for a 60-70 Chevy engine. Mainly to answer a lot of the questions that I have and to answer anyone elses questions if they have them.

Good things to post on this thread would include guides, tool recommendations, and troubleshooting questions.

I will begin by asking the most basic question.

Is it worth rebuilding a 283 V-8 engine numbers matching?

If not, how do you know what engine will fit your specific vehicle?

Does engine year matter, or can it just be any small block V-8 with the right mounts?

Thank you!

Mr dad just "inherited" a "57 Buick RM - that has been garaged forever with 76,000 original miles. Although basically in great shape, it does need a tail light assembly and some work to restore to showroom quality. My dad wants to just sell it to Jay Leno or maybe the Japanese, as they love these cars from what he says. Me, I'm totally against it and want to restore it and keep this gem in the family!! If anyone knows someone with original parts for this car, please let me know.

I have 78 gmc vandura with a 350, i been going crazy trying to figure out what I might have missed on a tune up. It started one day the van was smoking and running slugish so i changed the plugs, wires and cap....still didnt help, and i notice a strong gas smell too...so i rebuilt the carburetor, still no go, got a new one still flooding so i thought it could be something in the ignition system, replaced coil and ignition module .....well still flooding and it has a good spark, timing set at TDC on #1 , battery fully charged, and compression is between 130 to 140 PSI. I also done a valve job on it new valve seals and headgaskets too, also drain the fuel tank and installed new fuel pump the only thing i havent checked into is the timing chain...could a worn timing chain cause flooding? Im at a lost on this van:confused:

I recently found a car that was the last 1 on the lot when a Chevy dealership closed. It was driven to storage & had 8 miles on it when I got it.To all the skeptics,I point out that it would've cost more to fake it than it would have to restore it.The sticker is still in the window and the cardboard carpet protectors for test drives are in place. It has 180 miles on it now.I am currently replacing all the rubber seals and there isn't much else to do.While advice is plentiful,I'm hoping for some tips from those with experience.I already made 1 mistake by driving it home instead of trailering it.Because of the uniqueness of the car I want to do it right and any advice you can give me would be appreciated.Thanks.

I have a chance to buy a 63 Chevy SS Impala 409 four speed car. It has been sitting outside for 30 years. Bumpers and trim have been removed but are in the car. Owner started an amateur restoration but quit. It appears all parts are with car. Engine has been started several times over the years but has not been started in the last five years. Please advise on what to offer. New member. Malvin Thanks
