From what I've been able to find online, the vin for a 55-57 cadillac should be on an aluminum plate riveted to the drivers front body post. So, what happens if that tag is missing? The trim tag is still in place with a body number & everything else, but I can't find a vin anywhere. Does it appear in any other locations? Can I get a replacement plate from GM if I provide 'em with the trim tag info & like the engine number or somethin' like that?

As i posted before in the general topic area, this is my first project and was wondering a few things.

I was wondering what are some good resources to help me out with info and to find parts that might be hard to find?

Another thing is, were the car is sitting now i can do work on it but its not covered and sense i live in an apartment i don't have a garage or workshop i can use. So i was wondering if it is possible to do it where its at and if its not or would be a better idea, what can i do for a good work place.

And before i can move it i need to do some work on it to get the wheels turning. So i was wondering on what i should start to look at or do to get this thing at least rolling so i can get it on a trailer.

I can post some pics if its needed

I don't want it to seem like im just digging for info from you guys but i don't know many people that have done this before and the few i do live way far away.

So thank you for any info you can give.

Working on my wife's hot rod, a 72 Chevy Impala, anyway she loves it!

The rear end gears are highway gears (3.08) with a 350/350. I have juiced the engine to a aluminum intake with Q jet, HEI ignition and one wire alternator. The tranny I plan to swap to a 700r4.

The rear end has been howling at me everytime I take it out for a spin, so I tore into that. Typical corporate 10 bolt with trailing arms and coil springs. Dropped the rearend onto the floor to make repairs easier. Opened the rearend cover and to my surprise, a 12 bolt ring gear! Have you ever heard of such a thing?!?!?! I have spoken to people from the east coast to west coast to the great lakes. People tell me I am wrong - I have a 12 bolt cover and 10 bolt ring gear. Look, I can count! 10 bolt cover and 12 bolt ring gear. Well no one makes a gear set for that.

My question . . .

What years and makes and models can I go after in the junk yards to find a replacement rearend that is a normal rearend that I can get an aftermarket gear set? I know I can get another 72 Impala but they are hard to find. How about a Chevelle, or Cadillac, or Olds 98, or Buick 225 and what years. I know a 71 Impala convertible rearend won't fit!
Please help and thanks in advance.

When I start the car, after 12 years it fires up fine but about 5 seconds in it dies. It doesn't even warm up to idle. If I start it and immediately open the throttle on the carb it rev's and rev's and rev's but as soon as I stop it takes a few seconds and then dies.

I'm working to restore a 1939 LaSalle, problem right now is I have no paperwork on the car and cannot find the VIN number. I read somewhere else online that the VIN is either on the driver's side frame rail by the upper control arm, or behind the motor, but I can't seem to spot it (those locations were for a '37).

The style code for the car is 38-5027 and the body number is 845.
Anyone have a clue where the VIN is hiding?
I just started my rebuilt 65 Corvette SM (350 HP, Hyd lifters). Oil pressure is too high - pegs my oil gauge at 60 psig. Builder says "no problem, drive it a while and it will come down" I don't like this. What will it do to my gauge ? (can't be good). He must have put a Hi-Perf pump in it and it doesn't need one.

Hello,

I noticed this forum contains mostly cars, but I figured you may know how to help me out on my 52 pickup.

I am 6'3" and around 300 pounds. These old truck cabs are for midgets (height impaired....like my Cousin!). The steering wheel was nestled right ontop of my belly. I purchased a Grant steering wheel, but that made the steering wheel taller. I thought about getting a thinner seat to give me some more room between the steering wheel and my well formed "Keg". I really like the chrome tilt wheels they have....(kill two birds with one stone by getting the turn signal kit installed with the tilt wheel.)

I took the truck down to "Rods R Us" and had them look at adding in the tiltwheel. He said that the 52 Steering box and steering column is all one unit...(no rag....something or another) Anyways he said he would have to cut out a piece and install the joint and then we could shorten the steering column and add the tiltwheel. $1200 buckaroonies for labor etc....

While looking at a Jim Carter catalog I see that they have a Power Steering conversion kit for 1947-1953 models using a 1969-1987 Cheverolet 2 WD pickup power steering box. It says that you can install a GM tilt steering column after that.

Does this sound cheaper and better then the estimated $1200 for fabricating the old steering box and column? Does anyone have any solid ideas for a fat guy in a little car?

Hi, I have a 76 Nova right now with an automatic transmission. I am trying to find a complete kit to convert it to manual 5 speed. I know Keisler has a bunch of kits but none for this year. I was wondering if anyone knew if any other chevy models like the 70-81 camaro kit would fit in the 76 nova. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. They have kits for the 70-81 camaro, 62-67 nova, 68-74 nova, 64-72 chevelle and a lot more.

Thanks

Got a few questions

I have a 1965 olds cutlass F85, it my dads actually. I think it came origanaly with a 330ci motor my father had a new cam put in and had the engine bored 30 over and enitrely rebuilt. He drove it for about 4000 miles and parked it for some reason (he says something to do with the brakes) its been sitting outside for about 10 years hasn't moved. WELL today i got a great idea to unbury it after 2 guys came by the other day and were estatic about the car( i thought they see something in it why not give it a shot). the frame is all solid the body is solid other then the already known to be rotted floor boards the car doesn't look to ruff. Here inlies my question where should i start on the motor? what should be the first thing I do? I've never restored a car before so HELP haha please:cool:

all,

What happened to the old school method of lowering a car by cutting one ring off front springs and removing a few leafs from multi-leaf rear spring set up?

Now they offer drop spindles, air ride technology, complete sub chassis assemblies, four point links, etc....and these companies that offer these parts to lower our cars state that performing the above will set the camber and caster off that it will eventually damage everything!

I remember doing this back in the day to set up stock cars and other hot rods and ran them for years like that.

Any ideas on the best, most cost effective manner to lower a classic muscle car? Old school method OK?

Hey everyone. In my 78 Chevy El Camino my 350 is having a little dilemma. When I floor it and shift into third gear(most of the time it is in 3rd gear) my engine dies a little then starts to go again and does that repeatedly for a few seconds. Does anyone know what would be causing this?
