Hi everyone! I am buying this Fleetwood from a really good friend of mine. It was given to him by his uncle when he passed away and he just hasn't had the time to work on it or drive it like it needs to be drive.
It was meticulously taken care of and it really shows. It has 109,000 miles on it, is nearly fully optioned out and runs like new.
And the cost of all this magnifance to me? $750...
Even though i am young, i will not "pimp my ride" this car like everyone else would. I'm am trying to keep it as bone stock as possible to keep its value up. This may not yet be a complete classic but i think it will be in the near future.
Occassionally i will be posting questions i may have. Today i'll start with one
It has the original 8-track/ AM FM radio. I would like to keep that for originality, but i know some guys that restore cars will add a second radio for daily driving purposes that has an aux in and other things. I would like to know how this is easily done?

I am going to take my chances here and ask a question that no one has yet to tackle and answer.

Everyone knows that the 1940 Chevrolet was a one year only car. But, people also know that convertible models had reinforced frames but void of an X brace as with other cars of that era.

In 1940, they put under the Cabriolet (convertible) the craziest of chassis designs and wonder why? It was a one year, one car only chassis and made no sense by design, which was waaay overbuilt Kind of a H / KV / X design with a large square steel place on the under side only covering the various legs-brace junction.

GM had available to them any number of standard X brace designs and they even used it on the following 1941 model year Chevy Convertible.

So, was there a reason for this oddity? Was is experimental or some test? It is not mentioned in brochures nor shop manuals. Never shown in detail anywhere except for one shim chart I saw which was in a bulletin. Outside of that it remains a mystery and almost like they were hiding it's existence for some reason. :-/ :-?

Does anyone dare to answer this? If you need visual examples I can post. Thanks!

Jim

What I find fascinating and possibly someone can elaborate on this, is the fact that the GM central tunnel X frame introduced on the 1957 Cadillac, was both controversial and dangerous with at least a couple lawsuits filed (all GM won which is another story in itself).

But when GM decided to start ditching this design for a more conventional perimeter box frame in 1961 starting with Oldsmobile and Pontiac, there was little fanfare or even advertising within ads or brochures about this new frame. In fact, I only saw a 1/8 page size section in the 1961 Oldsmobile brochure and that is about it.

If this new “Box Strength Guard-Beam Frame” was so revolutionary and superior to the X style, why wasn’t it advertised more? Brochures had a habit of showing frames regularly up to this point and even beyond like when Cadillac itself dropped it in 1965. But when first introduced it was a different story apparently?

Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Jim

I am interested in selling it and I am having a difficult time getting an approximate market price I can use to guide my listing and negotiating. I tried using the forum search function here but an answer wasn't forthcoming. I've spent an hour googling around, and it seems that my car is worth less than $1,000, because there is some rust on the frame. Otherwise, the condition of the car: the body is in pretty good shape, the engine is mostly gone, all the glass is still on there, does not run, and it is very dirty.

I'll try to post pictures in the next few days. In the meantime, can someone please link me to a site or a forum post that goes through each determinant of value in a car like this, and generally explains the market for classic cars to a novice like me. I am looking to just get the most money out of this car as I can, for the time being. In the future, it is a small dream of mine to have a sweet-looking classic car.

Thank you.

We would like to find the VIN plate, or whatever it was called back then, to discover more about the car, but alas, the one in the engine compartment had been removed long ago. Does anyone know if Pontiac would have placed another identification plate anywhere on the car? The body is in decent shape, but everything is really stiff, and we just got the doors open today, so we haven't really searched for another plate. Knowing where to start looking would be a great help. Thanks!

Hello everybody.
I recently just bought a '65 Impala wagon. The car itself is in great condition as the guy I bought it from got it from Cali. This is the first old car I've had/ever worked on, so I have a lot to learn. I have a few questions for everyone;
1) It has been soda blasted, so I need to paint it. I'm planning on painting it myself with help from my dad, and I'm wondering if anybody has any tips for the process.
2) I still haven't decided what color(s) to paint it. I've looked all across the internet for pictures, but haven't found any that I'm completely satisfied with. I really want to go with a two tone: dark green on bottom with white on top. Has anyone seen one that stands out?
3) The guy in Cali, for some strange reason, painted all of the original interior black/gray. After spending some time trying to take the paint off, I decided that it would be too much work, so I want to get the seats reupholstered. The guy I know who does this kind of thing told me to look online for pre-made skins for them, but I haven't been able to find any for this model/year. Are there other cars with the same seats?
4) My dad and I saw a few cars at a show recently with electric fans for the radiator. Would that be worth doing? I need to replace the radiator anyway...

I have just received a 1956 Oldsmobile Holiday 98. I was going through the regular maintenance. The car has been sitting for about 4 years. The brakes were drained, all fluids replaced. The engine and transmission run perfect! It has the Rocket V8 and the Hydro-Matic transmission. the problem is the brakes. I went to fill up the brake fluid and the stem that holds the dip stick and attaches to the master cylinder broke off. It looks to be a pressure fitting. Any one have suggestions on how to fix? Can JB weld work? How hard is it it to replace the master cylinder? Is there some other plug to use.
Thank you in advance.
Any Help is greatly appriciated.

Hey everybody, 1st post!

Anyways, I am having a problem with engine knock when I turn off the car. It's like it tries to keep running and fuel comes out the top of the carb. Not sure what the problem is. I don't think this is related but I flushed the radiator last week and this problem came about afterward. The timing is factory spec, I checked all the vacuum lines and one was disconnected by the distributor cap. Replaced it and it ran better for a while, but didn't fix the problem. Then I adjusted the fuel/air mixture and it didn't help. I replaced the timing gear and chain a few months ago. I'm stumped. Part of why I'm so confused is it doesn't do it all the time? And something really weird happened today, I cut the engine off and it made the sound a diesel engine does when it starts up. Thanks in advance for your 2 cents!

Don't know if this is the right forum. I just inherited this station wagon. It's been parked (in Seattle) for about 10 years. Surprisingly rubber looks good under the hood and at the four corners; it started with minimum coaxing and seems to run smoothly with no leaks or oil smoke. I realize that collectors aren't going to beat a path to the door over this one but my son is pretty excited about this as his first car. There are several, mostly cosmetic, items that need attention and I don't doubt that several more will pop up as some miles are put on the car. The car seems to fall in the too new for collectors and too old to have many in the salvage yards. Any ideas on where to go for things like interior tail gate panel and headliner?

How about an 8-track?

Gordy

I was at the local garage this morning getting my car inspected and started talking to the mechanic about old cars. He asked me if I had seen the 1939 La Salle 39-50 that was in the back. I went back to look and found a completely original 1939, complete with the original flathead V8 and interior. The paint is sad, the chrome is pitted, but the car is all there. I did not observe any rust in the quick look that I took. The car ran a few years ago, but has not recently run.

What is the ballpark that one of these cars would be worth? He said the owner wants to sell it as he has lost his storage. I assume in a restored state that this car would bring $20-$30K, but have no real knowledge of the market for these cars.

He also has a 1949 Lincoln convertible that another owner left. He wants too much money for it, however

David Nolen

I have a 1979 oldsmobile regency 98. 350. When I start it when it has been sitting overnight, I push the gas pedal and the choke closes appropriately. Then I turn the key and with either holding the pedal to the floor or pumping the pedal (doesn't matter) the starter turns and turns for 5-10 seconds, then all of a sudden it fires up. Once it goes it runs fine. This only happens when it is cold. When its warm it fires up right away. I've owned this car for a year and it seems that the time it takes to start has slightly increased. What do you think the cause of this is? One person mentioned that the gas is different now vs 1979 and being slow to start is expected. Does that make sense? Should I replace/rebuild the carburetor? Fuel filter? Or just keep driving it like this (it still always starts). Thanks in advance. Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi all,

in an austrian lake, we found a few years ago (amongst other "Wehrmacht"-cars) the remains of this sedan car and since then, we were discussing about the manufacturer of this car. After doing some research, I am now quite sure, it is a 1937 Chevrolet.

Can you approve this? What type of Chevrolet is it?

thanks and br from austria
