I got this one a couple of months ago and it was sitting for 12 years, the previous owner passed away. When I got it the belts and pulleys were all taken off and there were 2 four bolt Harmonic Balancers on the floor and a three bolt one on the car. It has two dipsticks, one in front and one in back. The year of the car (1973) calls for Autolight 45 sparkplugs, this is a 13/16th plug with fat threads. The sparkplugs in the car use a 5/8ths wrench and have a skinny thread. Can anyone help me figure out what engine this is. I have looked for numbers on the side of the motor and the top of the intake. I don't know what the engine number is supppsed to look like, can you tell me how many numbers it should have, should there also be letters? Any information will be helpful and appreciated.

My car was idling like crap the other day so I figured since I just got it, it may have been awhile since anyone changed the oil out. I decided to go ahead and change the oil. I used Mobile 1 synthentic oil like I was reccomended on here. Anyways, I drain out the oil and noticed it was extremely dark and even after 10 minutes of draining, it was still coming out. I decided to go ahead and flush it to make sure all the bad stuff got out. I hooked up the hose, ran water through the engine, started it up and was waiting for the water to come out clean (The engine never went above idle so I was told this would be ok). Anyways, About 3 minutes into this, then engine starts shaking and shuts off. I figured it was all cleaned out so I plugged it up, added the oil and figured I was ready to go. WRONG! The car won't freaking start now. This car has been nothing but trouble for me, I think I am done with it.

G'day all.

I've always wanted to have an old f series ute and am looking at using my 88GQ LWB Patrol running gear and chassis as a bases to mount it on. Firstly I'm not certain as to the size of the older f series from 48 through to 60's but is ideally what I'd like to use.

I'm also interested in the step side rear but may be alot of dramas with length etc.

The reason for using the Patrol is because I've spent a fair amount on the motor and running gear as it's all been either rebuilt or replace, but the body has seen better days. (years of 4wding) and I also want it 4wd not lowered!

Any help appreciated cheers Mick

Alright, I'm the owner of a 67 mercury cougar that i had been using as my daily driver and am now beginning to restore it as I get the money.

My question is about the steering box, SMB-E. Over time the play in my steering wheel had gotten worse and worse to the point where i had about 1/3 turn of play, so i ordered a rebuilt off of west coast classic cougars put it in and it seemed to be fine. After a few months the play started getting worse again leading me to believe that the problem lies elsewhere. I now have the same 1/3 turn of play and the column shaft moves pretty freely inside the gear, even shakes back and forth a little bit. I was once told that i needed a special rag joint because i have tilt steering although it is not functional but sometimes pops out of place.

I was wondering if anyone has been presented with this problem and knows a possible solution. I am going to be ordering a rebuild kit as i dont want to spend another 250 for the problem to arise again. the box in there is only about a year old.

Any ideas?

THanks in advance,

Hi all,

I'm looking for some assistance in identifying which Ford model that this rear brake setup was used.

I had purchased a 302, C4 trans and a rear axle which I was told came from a 1969 Fairlane. I have spoken to a few people now who say that they have never seen this type of setup and think it may have been used in th 50's.

The problem I have is that I can't get a match for the rear brake shoes to order a hardware kit.

The drums are 9 Inch and shoes 1 3/4 inch wide. All the shoes and hardware kit I can find are for the shoes which have a parking/emergency brake lever attached to them which is operated by cable.

The setup on my axle has a parking brake/emergency brake lever which goes through the back plate and attaches to one side of the wheel cylinder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This car was bought in 65 by my grandmother and passed down to me. The car has never been rebuilt fully original with 100,000 + or - a few miles not sure. Has 289/271 hp. was originally 3speed on the the colum now automatic 3 speed.

First of all, i am a mechanic been that way since i was 5. but i am a mopar man. never worked on fords. I was driving it one day when the oil light came on and i heard a banging noise which sounded to me no oil in the engine is cerculating so i turned off the engine. Just to be sure i pulled the oil filter and found it to be bone dry.

A few months ago i put a edlbrock performer series intake manafold with edlebrock 4b carb 600cfm on it cause the original carb was crapping out and intake was crap. the car ran wonderfully till the oil pump went.

My question is should i do a full rebuild or just replace the pump?

Keep in mind that i didnt say is that this car runs like a dream, if im not paying attention the needle will be barried past the 120 mph gauge. i have no idea how fast i have gone since the gauge only reads 120mph. But this car huals ass.

Please give m,e ideas.
Seems the 450 is for dual 4 barrels and doesn't have a choke. The 390 is more expensive than some. On my 2 barrel now the linkage goes to the right side of the carb and pull back at the bottom of the linkage. Does any 4 barrels work that way and if not other than riggin' something from the right side what's the options? I want a brand new carb out of the box, no messing with it. Plug & play!
Gents,

I am playing with a 54 Mercury, 256 ci and a Mercomatic. The 256 is a chronic smoker and is to be replaced. I just bought a 292 ci that is missing the following: intake/carb, exhaust manifolds, water pump and distributor. The block casting is C2AE (62' to 64"?). The head casting is ECZ-C (56"?).

Now the questions:

Will my 256 parts fit the 292 (except distributor)?

What would be the best distributor to use with this combo (256 carb is a Tpot)?

Suggestions for an eventual Intake and Carb replacement?

How do I determine what ECZ-C heads I have (compression ratio/HP)?

The engine was a non smoking, good runner but has been sitting for a year. Since it’s out, is there any weak link or “might as well replace it” parts that I should consider?

Sorry for the diatribe, but I’d like to do it right and I’m new to Y blocks.
1. I dont see any "formal roofs" for the year 1970 & 1971, was there any, or were they a type of "sports roof" hybrid?
2. Besides the date of manufacture, what is the difference between a 1970 & 1971 Torino?

Hi to all,

My name is Scott and I live in Western Washington. I am rebuilding a 1964 Ford F-250. It has a 292 w/ a 4 speed tranny and is good shape, just tired. This is my first rebuild in 40 yrs and am having a ton of fun. My 14 yr old son is helping me and we are going to start his first car when the truck is on the road. He does not yet know what he wants, one day this the next day that. He learns fast and does all the grunt work, I am not going to tell him its grunt work and will keep it quite as long as I can.

If any one has or knows where I can buy a set of Ram Horn exhaust manifolds for my 292 please let me know. John Mummert is making them again, $400 a set, looking for a deal.

Enjoy your ride, running of not,

I've got a set of bumpers for an 1955 Ford Mercury listed on eBay and I thought they'd generate a lot of interest. But I've had NO bidders! They are in great shape. I have no idea why there are no bidders. Anybody have any idea why no one seems interested? Maybe no one is restoring these old cars? Maybe there is no demand for bumpers like these. I can remember them from being a kid and I still think chrome bumpers are REAL bumpers. Anyway, just wondering what the deal is. Anyone got any ideas? Is there another, better, venue for selling 1955 Ford Mercury (REAL chrome bumpers? If you are interested in looking at them check out this link.

my dad just bought a 46 ford coupe and the only thing that needs to be finished is the interior, as of right now it has a set of leather seats out of a older caddy or an olds. i know that seats out of a 90s 2door mazda will fight, but i was wondering if anybody would know of any other seats that would fit and look good in it? and any other interior pieces such as door panels and carpeting? any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

Hello to all. Miss Julie and I are new here. Miss Julie is a stock 1954 Ford Customline Sedan, that my wife and I just got. I use to ride motorcycles but my back will not take it anymore. So we traded for Miss Julie so that my wife and I would still have something to do together.

A little about us..... Me I am Rick and my wife is Kristina. We live in Gaston Co. North Carolina. We have a small farm here and we use to spend much of our time on motorcycle. I am a third generation logger and my back no longer wants to tolerate the pains of a bike ride. My wife is in food service and this is her first old car of any kind. I use to be very fond of muscle cars and sleepers. But I thought that to much temptation to get in trouble on the roads.

And Miss Julie is our 1954 Ford Customline that we just got. She is in very good shape and drivable. She is Light Green Metallic in color and still runs on the factory 6 volt system. Julie is bone stock, no upgrades. Factory 223 inline 6 cyclinder, 3 on the tree, no radio (dash still sealed), interior has been redone about 10 years ago and new paint laid several years ago. My wife and I are the fourth owners since she was new. She has always been in NC and I hope for it to stay that way. We got her from a service man who was ready for something new before he began his third tour overseas for us.

I hope to meet some friends here and learn some tricks and tips in reguards to these old cars.

I'm working on my very first restoration and doing so on a budget. I know this question has probably already been asked by a few dozen people but does anyone know of a site/place where I can find affordable (NOT CHEAP!) parts? Right now the car pretty much needs a new everything. It was left out in the elements without the top and very poorly covered. The entire interior is just ruined. A small blessing is that the motor to the top works and the frame isn't rusted and actually moves surprisingly smoothly. Also it has a full set (including spare) of brand new tires.

The car really took a beating in the time it was set out and left to rot.

Oh, and for the curious. A couple photos of my baby as it was when I first saw it... There really is a car under the massive pile of junk that has since been cleaned away. I suppose I shouldn't complain considering it was just given to me and I paid not a single penny for it.
