Ford Torino N/W, Green, for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina, for $20,995.
For those of you wondering what a 1970 Torino Type N/W is, it is a special package destined for the Pacific Northwest (hence the N/W). Only 395 were built, and this one is a rare survivor equipped with a 351 and most of its original Washington Green paint completely intact.
Most Ford fans would call it Grabber Green, but in the spirit of the N/W, it was rechristened Washington Green (with sister colors Pacific Blue and Oregon Orange). According to the Marti Report that accompanies it, only 142 of the Type N/W cars were painted this color. This car's impressive state of preservation suggests that this car was treated like it was special from the day it came home from the dealer, and special features include the blacked-out hood with pins, the unique rocker-panel graphics, and a cool hood-mounted tach. The Torino coupe was selected as the standard body, making it an unusual animal even among relatively rare full-sized performance machines, and it wears its proportions well with a minimum of add-ons. The windows have been tinted, which gives it a monochromatic look, but otherwise it remains highly original and extremely well preserved.
Almost all the Type N/Ws received a black vinyl bench seat interior, which was designed to easily carry six passengers. Wonderfully original with details that no aftermarket kit could duplicate, the seat covers are taut and wrinkle-free, showing no signs of age and little wear. The carpets are so nice, it's easy to think they've been replaced, but they're original. The dash pad is uncracked, and all the instruments in the two-tier gauge package are fully functional. And unlike many of its contemporaries, this Torino retains all its original equipment, including the Ford AM radio in the dash. If you're into preservation class judging, of course, that's exactly how you want it and you won't be disappointed here.
The 351 cubic inch 4-barrel V8 under the hood was a $93 option on the Type N/W, and only 67 buyers chose it when it came time to write the check, making this one exceptionally rare and desirable. The entire engine bay was freshened for show a few years ago. Ford Blue paint on the block and air cleaner looks exactly right against the satin black engine bay, and all the details have been corrected, including proper hoses and clamps, factory-coded plug wires, and even a reproduction Autolite battery. Underneath, the Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission drives a 9-inch full of 3.00 gears, and the chassis is still finished with the original undercoating and no signs of rust. An authentic dual exhaust system gives it just the right engine note, and it rides on great-looking Magnum 500 wheels with staggered BFGoodrich radials.
Obviously intended for preservation class judging, this rare Torino Type N/W is a great opportunity to own an unusual muscle car that will always start conversations.
