Full-sized performance was still spelled Fairlane in 1967. This beautifully presented '67 Fairlane 500 hardtop offers more space inside than a comparable Mustang, a more formidable presence on the road, and just as much performance from its 302 cubic inch V8. Originally a C-Code 289 car, this Fairlane now sports a freshly rebuilt 302 that runs excellent.

Refinished in its original code M Wimbledon White, this striking Fairlane conceals its size with great styling that dominated the NASCAR tracks in the mid-1960s. Even the factory called it a fastback, although its hardtop profile is more traditional than the name would imply. They didn't take any liberties during the restoration, either, so all the original badges, emblems, and trim pieces went back on as soon as the fresh paint was cured and buffed, and the chrome bumpers are so good that I have to believe that they have been restored. All the glass is very good, including the impossible to replace rear window, which remains clear and unscratched. Frankly, it's more than a little unusual to find a Fairlane this well preserved.

The preservation and quality continues inside, where a fresh black vinyl interior provides brilliant contrast to the white paint. It's possible that the door panels are original, and if that's the case, the car must have been quite nice prior to the restoration. The factory gauges only covered the basics, so a trio of auxiliary gauges was added underneath, and everything works as it should. That steering wheel is an aftermarket piece, but the smaller diameter and fat leather-wrapped rim give the big Fairlane a racy feel that the factory's skinny plastic wheel lacked. Look how clean the door jambs are, how solid the trunk is, and how well the windows seal-someone sweated the details with this car.

Under hood, the 302 V8 was rebuilt just 300 miles ago. Fully tuned and ready to enjoy, it starts almost as quickly as you can turn the key, has a great small block Ford idle that is easy to love. Bright Ford Blue paint covers the engine as it did when it was new, but additions include braided stainless hose covers on the radiator and heater hoses, as well as a power steering unit from a late-model Ford product. Otherwise, it's all factory stock, delivering reliable performance with a great V8 soundtrack delivered by a new dual exhaust system. A C4 3-speed automatic is a willing dance partner, with crisp downshifts and imperceptible upshifts, and the bulletproof 9-inch rear will outlive us all. Power disc brakes deliver reliable stopping power, and live behind Magnum-style wheels wearing modern white-letter radials.
