The Ferrari Testarossa is one of the most beautiful Ferrari's produced to date and was one of the iconic models for those growing up in the 1980's. The twelve cylinder mid engine racer was first produced in 1984 and continued until 1991, when adaptations of the car were introduced with the 512 TR and F512 M. The Testarossa era finally ended once the Maranello was launched.

The word Testarossa means "red head" in Italian. The two door coupe had a five speed manual transmission with rear wheel drive, delivering 390 bhp from its 4.9 litre engine. In total there were forty eight valves within the engine. The US market had a slightly less powerful engine delivering only 380 bhp.

The Ferrari Testarossa had a wheelbase of 2,550 mm, a length of 4,485 mm, a width of 1,976 mm and a height of just 1,130 mm. The car itself weighed 1,506 kg. The 16 inch wheels were 8 inches wide at the front and a huge 10 inches in width at the rear, allowing the car to put down its 390 bhp on the road.

A brand new Testarossa would set the UK customer back just Ј62,000, the price in the United States being $181,000 on top of a $2,700 tax bill. The tax in the US was largely due to the petrol consumption of the car, as Ferraris are not designed to be as economical as a family hatchback.

As the Ferrari Testarossa was so popular it featured in many films and TV programmes, most notably as the undercover car in season 3 of Miami Vice. For those of you into video games the car was used in the racing game Outrun which was an arcade favourite in the 1980's.

Only one official Testarossa convertible, or Spider, was ever created, with many more unofficial versions on the market. The one true spider was produced for Gianni Agnelli as a gift. At the time Agnelli was the head of Fiat. The car was produced in silver with white leather interior and detachable white roof and would have looked rather impressive.

In total, over 7,000 Testarossa's were produced which made it far from rare and epitomised the excessive yuppie culture of the 1980's where it was all about the clothes you wore and the car you drove.
