About Stratus

Top

The Dodge Stratus was a comparatively short-lived model, being the symbol of the modern Nineties to Noughties middle class family. Replaced by boxier hybrids with consciences, it lives on as an exemplar of the previously relevant V6 with a sufficiently low price tag for the average, pre-recession household.

On introduction in 1995, the model struck the market to cheers of acclaim. It topped ten "best lists" on its launch and perished with its era, after producing a million units, in 2006. The Dodge Avenger took its place as its racier sibling.

The first Dodge Stratus had all the aesthetics to make it on the family market. As a 2.4 liter V6, it was adequately powered for every day needs, with optional oomph for those who wanted more. By 1999, however, the 2.5 liter V6 was the sole standard. The Spirit, Monaco and Dynasty were sold on North American territory only and offered almost customizable experiences. Most parts were interchangeable but they were, aesthetically, almost identical in the cabin and similar on the exterior. Tail lights, wheels and front fascia provided the main differences. Their features were competitive, offering semi-automatic transmission, antilock brakes and four wheel independent suspension. A six CD changer, sunroof, keyless entry and power windows gave the driver all the extravagance he desired.

Mexico was offered a turbo-charged option with an authoritative four cylinder engine. Europe received a 2.0 liter and a V6 whilst Brazil was afforded the Chrysler, adapted for altered road conditions through higher suspension.

2001 saw Dodge introduce a new grouping of sedans and coupes packing spanking new V6 engines and airbags. Its exterior dimensions received a slight redesign and the inclusion of sheet metal was the finishing stroke. The branded Autostick remained but with separate gate for manual gear changing. Anchors for child seats in the back and airbags designed to inflate in side collisions were the thoughtful inclusions for a vehicle still focused on families. The Dodge badge disappeared from doors in 2002. During this year, the Dodge Stratus was joined by a zestier R/T coupe.

Sebring joined Stratus in the second generation but the market was opting for larger models than these. In response, the new Intrepid and Charger models caused a sensation as larger vehicles achieving record sales figures. In 2003, alloy wheels received a flashier finish in chrome whilst coupes were the sporty siblings for younger generations. Until 2006, no significant changes were seen in the Dodge other than some subtle front detail alterations.

In 2006, the Dodge borrowed some of the coupe's zest, giving racier households a little bragging power. It features a more aggressive front end and crisp body lines. Indoors, comfortable driving is supplied by leather seating and quality audio. Its handling is supreme and its roomy interior and trunk yet again satisfy parental needs. It has noteworthy gas mileage and reliability. Penultimate handling makes this Dodge's penultimate model. It takes to curves with gleeful precision, giving its owner an entertaining drive. This is a 2.4 liter V6 with four speed automatic transmission. This V6 standard is slowly leaving the market as consumer scruples send them in hybrid directions. Many are low-spirited about its demise.
