Chevrolet Corvair Monza, Yellow, for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina, for $11,495.
Sometimes, simple is better. The same formula that worked so well for VW with the Beetle makes this pretty yellow 1967 Corvair Monza convertible a great collector piece that's ready to enjoy with a minimum of fussing.
The first thing you notice is its sunny disposition, enhanced by the bright yellow paint and the sleek lines of the Corvair shape that was so successfully updated in 1965. The model lineup was trimmed, and the convertible was only available in top-of-the-line Monza trim, which was great news for Corvair fans. The bodywork was refinished a few years ago, and it shows the usual signs of someone taking it out and having a good time, but its days of being a commuter car ended decades ago. Is it perfect? No, but if it were perfect the price tag would be much bigger and you'd probably have to sign some kind of waiver promising never to drive it. Body panels are all original, so it's clean, and you can enjoy it without worries.
The interior gives you the same vibe: a clean, presentable driver's environment that doesn't worry about being used as a car. Black buckets always look awesome in a yellow car, and thanks to Chevy's skilled designers, it looks as great today as it did when it was new. The seats and seat covers may even be original, suggesting great maintenance and careful living. Three round instrument panels cover the basics, and any Camaro fan will find themselves right at home behind the wheel. With the engine out back, there's a lot of space and no center transmission tunnel to get in the way. The door panels are nicely finished with just enough brightwork to make them interesting, but not take away from the clean lines. Overall, the interior carries the same great patina as the rest of the car, and it would be a shame to consider restoring it.
Power comes from one of the most unique motors in General Motors' history, an air-cooled flat six. In this Monza convertible, it's mated to a 2-speed Powerglide, making it easy to drive-just point and shoot, and it's incredibly zippy through traffic. Out on the open road, it has a cool sound that is unlike anything else you've experienced, and breathing through a pair of carburetors, throttle response is crisp. Topped by a chrome air cleaner which feeds the dual carburetors through slender ductwork, the engine is low in the chassis, ensuring crisp handling regardless of what Ralph Nader claims. You'll never get tired of entertaining onlookers with the large, open front trunk, and the uniquely designed cooling fan which is driven by the accessory belt thanks to a cleverly positioned alternator and idler pulley. The all-independent suspension delivers a great ride and impressive handling, especially riding on new radials and original wire wheel covers.
For low-cost, open air fun, don't overlook this Corvair. It's everything we love about a hobby car with an easy to justify price tag. Call today!
