For 31 years, Chevrolet produced the full-sized Caprice. Introduced in 1965, it sold more than one million units and continued to be one of the most popular vehicles of the late 60's and early 70's. While it went through a facelift or two in order to change the body style and engine specifications throughout its production dates, the Chevrolet Caprice, Chevvy Caprice offered Americans comfort paired with an aesthetic appeal.

The Caprice was offered as more than just a full sized vehicle. At one point, it came in a formal hardtop coupe as well as an estate station wagon. In fact, from 1971 to 1976, the Chevy Caprice was the largest Chevrolet ever built. It began as an option package to the Impala with several different modifications being made. It added a total of $200 to the cost of the car. At that time, the Chevy Impala was sold for around $2,742. Then, the Caprice took off on its own.

The series began with a two-door hardtop as well as an estate station wagon. Because of its wood grain offered on the outside, it brought back memories of the 'woodies' wagons in the mid-1950s. There were several upgrade options that included an automatic transmission and power steering. However, just about every Chevrolet Caprice was built to these specifications.

Major changes took place in 1977 as the Caprice Classic was offered to consumers. The vehicle was downsized, reducing both its weight and the outside dimensions. However, the interior came with more room and extra trunk space. While downsizing was a risky move for General Motors, it paid off in the end with the 1977 full sized vehicle being more fuel-efficient and the number one selling car in the United States for the year. Consumers weren't the only ones excited about the Caprice Classic. Car and Driver named the vehicle, Car of the Year.

Another revision took place in 1980 to promote even better fuel efficiency. The goal of the revision was to once again reduce the vehicle's weight. While the exterior looked the same, it was a new sheet metal that helped with the overall weight. The trunk space was also increased and the base model came with a V8 engine.

In 1986, the vehicle went through another restyle, moving around the emblem and making changes to the exterior. The Chevrolet Caprice, Chevvy Caprice was offered as a four-door sedan, a coupe and the station wagon (able to seat eight people). Finally, in 1991, the vehicle received a complete and modern update. Once again, the Caprice Classic became Car of the Year according to 'Car and Driver'.

As of 2009, Chevrolet began to offer the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle. It was sold exclusively to US and Canadian law enforcement officials. These vehicles feature a variety of different adjustments to help with an officer's overall comfort as well as improvements to the overall functionality of the vehicle.
