About Chevrolet
Chevrolet is an automobile brand produced by General Motors. Founded on November 3rd, 1911 by racecar driver, Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder, William Durant, Chevy ultimately merged with General Motors in 1918.
Chevrolet was originally intended to sell mass-marketed vehicles to the public in order to compete against Ford's popular Model T. During the 1920s, "Chevrolet" and "Chevy" were synonymous with General Motors.
The first Chevrolet was the expensive Series C Classic Six, a Brass Era automobile. These types of cars were considered Brass Era because of the prominent brass fittings on the radiators and other parts of the vehicle. The early Series C Classic Six series was larger, powerful and stylized, making it more costly than subsequent cars. Although Louis Chevrolet loved the high-performance car, William Durant had dreams of a more affordable vehicle.
Under Durant's management, the cars that followed the Series C would be 4-cylinder competitors to the Model T. Chevrolet's first engine was a T-head configuration that could produce 40 horsepower.
From the 1920s into the 1940s, Chevy competed with Ford and, along with Plymouth, was known as one of the "low-priced three".
Chevy launched the Standard Six in 1933 as a more affordable alternative to the 1932 model. It came in three body styles - a coach, coupe and a coupe with a rumble seat. 1936 would bring new innovations to the model and cabriolet and sports sedan versions were created. It was discontinued in 1937.
1955 brought about the development of the Chevrolet small-block V8, which is a design that has remained in continuous production. This makes it the longest-running mass-produced engine in the entire world.
Popular Chevy automobiles include the Chevy 3100 ½ ton pickup, the Suburban and the Bel Air. The Chevy Bel Air was a full-sized car produced by GM between 1950 and 1975. It is the embodiment of classic 1950s nostalgia and is a favorite of collectors throughout the world. Early Bel Airs featured a hardtop, which was designed like a convertible without a detachable roof. The first Bel Air model cost $1,741 and weighed a whopping 3,225 pounds. By 1953, the Bel Air was considered a premium model and was advertised as "entirely new, through and through". The car would develop through the 1970s, become popular in drag racing and would even become the choice police sedan. Today, Chevrolet is one of the biggest automobile makers in the world.
