About LeSabre
Throughout its years of production, the Buick LeSabre had been considered as the company's primary entry-level and full-sized model. It was the most affordable amongst all Buick's models when it was first launched in 1959. This particular line had eight generations in total, with the last launched in 2000 and discontinued in 2005.
The name LeSabre was first used in 1951 and described a model that boasted of aircraft-patterned design elements. In 1959, the company adapted the name for its newest model, which would also consequently replace the Buick Special. All releases, except for its third-generation model, would offer all available body styles. For the third generation, Buick had decided to drop the station wagon design from its list. In 1977, full-sized models had also been removed from the list and it became only available as a wagon, sedan and coupe. Over the years, the Buick LeSabre had proven to be the company's bestselling full-sized model in addition to being able to boast having the longest-used nameplate.
From its initial launch until 1971, all models in this line had been issued with standard 3-speed manual transmission, but most orders coming in had been for the optional Turbine Drive A/T model. The years 1961–1962 had been the only exception and in which the automatic transmission had been made the standard issue for this lineup.
Prior to its downsized designs, the LeSabre had been produced from 1959 to 1985 as a rear-drive six-passenger vehicle. In 1986, Buick switched the design to a front-wheel drive and options for hardtops for its two-door and four-door designs had been taken off the list at the end of 1976. From 1977 until its last year of production, only pillared designs had been available for the Buick LeSabre.
Station wagon designs in this lineup had been relaunched in 1970 and production continued for two decades. In 1990, the station wagon design was once again removed from the list, but integrated with the company's Roadmaster series instead. The last of its kind was produced on June 18, 2004 with the Buick Lucerne taking its place in 2006.
