About A35

Top

The Austin A35 was produced by the British Motor Corporation from 1956 until 1968. The A35 was a very compact car and was produced in a saloon, estate and van versions throughout its life. The car's predecessor, the A30 was hugely popular and it was hoped that the A35 could build upon this.

In total there were 280,897 units produced across all three versions. The saloon was introduced in 1956 and continued until 1959 and had the shortest production life of the A35. The estate version was produced for six years from 1956 until 1962, whilst the longest serving A35 was the van version from 1956 until 1968. The saloon car was eventually succeeded in 1959 by the Austin A40 Farina, though the estate and van versions continued to run. The A35 had a wheelbase of 79.5 inches, a length of 135.5 inches and a width of 55 inches.

In 1956 a pickup model of the Austin A35 was launched, though this was largely unsuccessful with only 475 sold. The pickup market was entered by a number of other manufacturers, no doubt due to their popularity in the United States, though there was little appeal in the UK market.

The A35 was graced with a more powerful engine, giving 34 bhp with a straight four engine. The design of the car was similar to its predecessor, though had a larger rear window and coloured front grille.

The saloon version of the Austin A35 had a 948cc straight four engine and had a top speed of 71.9 mph with a 0-62 speed of 30.1 seconds. This was tested by the British Motor magazine in 1956. Whilst performance may not have been fantastic, petrol consumption was very favourable with 41.5 miles to the gallon. The saloon car cost £554 which even included taxes of £185.

The car was probably most famously seen in the Wallace and Gromit films, "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" and "A Matter of Loaf and Death". The registrations appearing in the film was "HOP 2 1T" and "DOH NUT5" respectively. The car was also placed on show in 2009 as part of a Wallace and Gromit cracking ideas exhibition.
