A fabulous Glenn Pray 2nd generation build of a gorgeous 1935 Auburn 851SC Boattail Speedster using many original trim pieces along with proper center chassis, the flowing of the body shape was used by this fabulous high design Auburn along as well as a similar Rolls Royce design of the era, this was so named as the custom expensive speed boats had similar designs ‘ducktail/boat tail’ rear design, this is finished in beautiful Off White with Burgundy fenders ‘as factory’ finish with pearlized hand rubbed paint, proper hand done pin striping and all special chrome and stainless unique to the 1935 Auburn is part of the presentation, items like the wind wings are hand etched, areas like the elegant windshield have the chrome support and trim from an original ‘851’ is believed to be extremely valuable, the color and presentation are truly “Movie Star” design, this feature the famous external simulated exhaust pipes exiting the hood, in this full build, special Hartz Burgundy top with full rebuilt frame, with wide whitewalls and body colored wire wheels and highly design grill and extreme bumpers along with the ‘side’ exhaust, the whole look is just gorgeous, the build is 400 miles,
this correct inner chassis is completed with the special Glenn Pray body, according to the restorer, the construction has about $85,000 in parts and car coupled with over 1000 hours of personal along with outside professional build help, seen with the heavy duty Pray fiberglass body that is correct in size as to the original steel bodied Auburns from the ‘30s, the unique look is amplified by the famous chrome ‘Flying Lady” hood ornament, the ‘851’ aluminum grill, rare vertical front cowl and radiator have the rare and beautiful vertical chrome spears believed to the original Auburn pieces that are shown in the photos of the breathtaking front end, this lighting redone with bullet external headlights fitted with special halogen H4 headlights, lighting includes lower amber fog running lights and other modern upgrades, modern V8 engine has only 400 miles on 396cid, 375 horsepower, 4v engine, aluminum heads, new aluminum radiator, show detailed under hood, power steering and disc brakes, the widewhites are radials for ease of driving, a great package,
HISTORY: a Cord Restorer by the name of Glenn Pray bought the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Company from the former owner Mr. Winslow in 1960, history shows that Glenn Pray became President of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Company and referred to his 866 Speedsters as Second Generation Cars or Auburn Continuations, Glenn stated that his cars were never meant to be Replicas of the originals. Since Glenn owned the original Auburn Cord Duesenberg Company (ACD Co. ), the Auburns and Duesenberg’s were designed and built in Auburn, Indiana where the current museum resides today, Glenn Pray then moved everything to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Glenn Pray later went on to build these Second Generation Auburns and Cords from his factory in Broken Arrow from 1966 through 1981, his vehicles are terrific as his plan was a modern day version of the original Auburn Speedster while using many original components in the build, luxuries such as power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and modern V8 drive trains with some independent suspensions that were not available on the original cars but they were on his cars.
This specific Auburn 351 has been verified by the ACD Club with chassis 89851, there is a body Data Tag attached to the car (see LINK) of the ‘Auburn Automobile Company’ with Model 851, Serial No. NCS 89851, engine # 11J150699, on the left door jam, there is a VIN#NCS89851 that has been assigned by the North Carolina DMV, there is a clear TITLE stating that this is a ‘1935 Auburn Convertible’ with title 778503092879063, this is very helpful in the registration and ownership showing that the middle chassis and other components are used in the build, since the Auburn body work covered the stampings on the chassis, these new numbers are shown making this now a readable VIN and a legal title for everywhere,
now, full explaining the authenticity that is to the best of this writer’s knowledge, there is no way to have a Glen Pray stamping on the fiberglass body, rather authenticity is of what it is ‘here today’, this car and middle Auburn chassis was found in Indiana in a storage facility for many years, this is the ‘home’ of the original Auburns, was a normal rough ‘barn’ condition in the running gear that was going to be replaced in the new build, then an initial restoration was started, after that was started, this was then purchased by the last owner in 2009 and luckily the fiberglass body was exceptional condition with lots of original ‘pieces’ came with car, since Mr. Pray is now gone, there is no way to ascertain any more information than here presented, since the car was found at the ‘home’ of the Auburn, the middle frame is so solid and the middle of the chassis is believed to be from the original cars leading to the credibility of this build and history, this leads great credence car being so correct, this body is extremely hard to build with its complex lines, the North Carolina restorer did extensive examination of this body and frame before any work was started,
great research and effort went into this build, the body and trim presentation have had great effort to maintain a correct presence, has ‘boat tail’ has the vertical rear chrome spear, has an original side chrome “Auburn Lady” on the rear quarter that is assumed correct as part of the package, the front opening doors work properly, the rear deck piece fits well, this lifts up with chrome hinges for luggage, the large, very hard to do flowing art deco fenders are finished beautifully, has the front and rear chrome bumpers that extend out from the car to add to this presence as designed, these pontoon deco fenders have the proper single vertical chrome piece at the rear of each, has the dual top cowl chrome lights with mirrors for looks and driving safety,
ENGINE: the 396 engine has only 500 miles on the build with the final tune and road test for Fall 2011, this is a GM stock block 396cid, 375 horsepower, 4v engine, full modern serpentine belt system for alternator and cooling system, completely rebuilt with standard bore, new cam bearings, original pistons, new rings, rods, turned crank, new bearings, expensive uprated ‘Patriot’ aluminum heads for performance and cooling, hydraulic lifters, hand ball milled Billet aluminum valve covers, updated air cleaner mounted over a 670cfm Holley 4v carburetor, Edelbrock aluminum intake, this is the optimum setup for street usage, Mobil 1 synthetic oil, Accel electronic ignition with Taylor spark plug wires, hand built full ceramic coated deep tube headers leading to a full aluminized dual exhaust system with mellow mufflers, the modern serpentine belt set up is easy to maintain, Optima gel-filled battery, battery tray, polished flex hoses, heavy duty aluminum radiator cools this large block engine, fresh radiator fluid, dual electric fans for cooling the engine, has a rebuilt 400 Turbo transmission that works perfectly, this whole engine package was hand built to smooth running condition with ample torque and use 93o octane fuel, the straight solid axel chose for ease of maintianence has a rear end gear that is a 3.73:1 that yields a good low end while being a ‘cruiser’, this has power steering and electric power brakes, fresh dual master cylinder cap for the braking system, all new fuel and brake lines, new steering gear box, the hood opens as original from the side with half opening and hood prop,
Chassis/wheels;, , suspension includes a new GM front end from the ’71 Caprice front sub-frame, stock rear axle, 3.73 gears, custom built rear, new rear trialing control arms, bushings and custom springs for excellent handling, this is mounted on expensive body colored wire spoke wheels with center caps, 235/75/15 B. F. Goodrich Silvertown wide whitewall radial tires, these look good and make the car drive very well, these are specially set for the Chevrolet front end, all frame work is fresh and solid for driven show,
Interior/exterior trim: this has the proper polished ‘machined’ ‘hammered’ factory dash, ‘antique’ gauges that are all new and all work, has the fuel gauge, oil pressure, temperature, volt meter, tachometer, speedometer, odometer, all looking very authentic, has a modern tilt polished steering column with wood/aluminum steering wheel, full burgundy leather interior custom installed as period, this great interior was completed by Rhoades Upholstery of North Carolina, a very custom shop, has the correct bench seat, door panels are done, the side door compartments have the leather cover for appearance as storage was initially planned in this area for weekend jaunts, has the side plastic insert windows, the sound system is now Kenwood CD Player with operators manual, front lower door speakers, two interior colored safety belts, the front end has a ‘V’ chrome front bumper, has the correct ‘period’ grill with the ‘851’ badging, the top of the hood has the famous hood ornament and this is set right above the believed original front 6 piece chrome middle trim, the windshield is very correct and the trim is believed very authentic to an original 851 car, note the VERY HIGH DESIGN chrome pieces around windshield are original to the best of all knowledge, very rare, this also has the proper driving lights mounted on the bumper with H4 headlights, has the amber driving lights on the correct ‘V’ front chrome bumper, has also small turn signals for safety, the glass and hard to get redone bright work cost $4000 plus installation, this includes the rear chrome treatment as factory,
Summary: the body and paint work are beautiful with knowledgeable work was done by William Johnson of North Carolina, final professional buffing for show presentation by Fraser Dante in Atlanta, here is a fabulous Auburn ‘851’ work of automotive art that is a fresh build of an older chassis and uprated body with newer suspension and awesome engine, initial build was started in 2009 and finished for driving with road test condition being checked along with working braking system ready for Fall 2011 shows, total mileage on this build is less than 400, this presentation is outstanding and the terrific running condition means this can be used, shown and enjoyed with wonderful ‘presence’, offered at an outstanding price under costing for $74,950
