2012-06-03

The USA now has another major automobile museum, with the opening over the weekend of LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM). Situated in Tacoma, Washington, the site comprises a nine-acre campus, with the museum proper housed in a four-storey, 165,000 square foot building.

Inside, the ACM will show up to 350 vehicles, from private collectors, corporation, and from the 3,500 vehicle strong LeMay collection. During his life, Harold LeMay acquired the largest privately-owned collection of automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, automobile and more, in the world. Howard had each year opened the collection to the public, a tradition the family continued after Harold passed away in 2000. The city of Tacoma donated the land for the building of the museum, and Harold's wife, Nancy, donated $16 million for the building of the museum.

The aim of the ACM is to:

  • Become the gathering place where automotive enthusiasts from around the globe celebrate America’s love affair with the automobile.
  • Create social networks for auto enthusiasts, serious collectors and educational entities.
  • Portray present achievements and future directions in the transportation industry, including design, technology and products.
  • Develop an education center / library to promote automotive history, restoration and preservation.
