When you think about classic cars most people imagine racetracks or cruising through the countryside. The Amphicar completely changes the stereotype of a classic vehicle as it transitions from the road right into the water. Thus, the name was created from a mix of amphibious (to represent water) and car (to represent driving on the road). These vehicles were only made from 1961 to 1968.

Over 3,000 Amphicars were imported into the US. Each vehicle held the engine in the back and included the Triumph Herald motor. It was possible to choose between four different colors, but every single vehicle was a convertible. It was possible to reach a top speed of 7 miles per hour while on the water. Once the tires hit the road, the vehicle would be capable of 70 miles per hour.

The Amphicar wasn't created to be vastly efficient in either the water or on the land. Interest comes more from the unique opportunity that awaits the Amphicar owner. To this day, it is still the most successful boat/car/vehicle for civilians. Whether on land or in water, the front wheels are used to steer the vehicle.

But what makes Amphicars move in the water? Two propellers for water and the driveline were both powered by a Hermes transmission. This was by far one of the most unique introductions into the civilian car industry. However, decline was inevitable with the changes to laws and regulations by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Financially, this was a blow that the Amphicar would not rebound from.

The manufacturer anticipated major sales in the upcoming years and continued to produce parts to the point of excess. Today, many of those parts are accessible to owners through Gordon's Imports, located in California.

During its heyday the Amphicar received its share of publicity. In 1965 two Amphicars found their way down the Yukon River in Alaska. The English Channel was mastered in 1968 despite the treacherous environment. In the 1970s a man was able to sail to Catalina Island from the shores of California.

The Amphicar has a bit of celebrity status because of its role in two films - 'Inspector Clouseau' in 1968, and 'Pontiac Moon' in 1994.
