About AMX

Top

The AMC AMX was produced by American Motors Corporation (AMC) as a two-seat sports car from 1968 to 1970. This car was classified in the muscle car category but was unique among American cars because it had a short wheel base. At the time, it was the only steel-bodied two-seater car being produced in America.

The 1957 Ford Thunderbird had been the last two-seater steel-bodied car built in America. The AMC AMX was considered a competitor for the Chevrolet Corvette, but it cost a lot less money.

Two specially prepared AMC AMXs set 106 world endurance and speed records in 1968. These records took place at the Goodyear track in Texas and were driven by Craig Breedlove, who was the World Land Speed Record holder. The car was put through its paces before it even became available for sale. Breedlove was asked to prepare the cars and had six weeks before they were to be shown at the Chicago Auto Show. The cars were aerodynamically modified and engines were changed. American Motors further promoted the car by introducing it to auto journalists at Daytona. This was done to emphasize its performance as a sports car. The company also entered into an agreement with Playboy Enterprises.

The AMC AMX was promoted as the only sports car in America that could be purchased for less than $3,500. Advertisements featured a race driver in a helmet at the starting line of a race and a slogan that stated the car was ready do 125 miles an hour. The advertising worked with young people and a record number of them showed up in AMC dealer showrooms. It was described as one of the best looking cars made in America.

The car was used as a pace car for the 1969 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The 12 pace cars were used by drivers, including Bobby Unser, to practice in the week before the mountain race. Over the next three years the AMX received a mild facelift and in 1970 the engine was changed to 360 Cu from the previous 343 V8. In 1970, after three model years, the two-seater model was discontinued.
